Hi, I just set up my first aquarium. It is 10 gallons size. I filled it with filtered water(brita filter) Installed the mechanical filter (with biobag in it) Installed the heater. The mechanical filter is running and cycling the water.
My question is whether I need to purchase an oxygenator (other name) the submerged device that will keep generating air bubbles.
Later I intend to put guppies, tetras, and a couple shrimp into this aquarium.
Thanks for advice
As long as the output of the filter breaks the surface, there's no need for any other oxygenation. Oxygen enters at the surface, and wherever there's a surface at which water and oxygen meet, oxygen dissolves into the water, and surface agitation is essential in this process.
How to install your new BRITA Filter tap with Sophie. Enjoy visably clear and fresh water with this new system from BRITA.
I used to buy those 24-packs of Bottled Water for like $10 per box. I'd go through 3-4 bottles a day.
My friend suggested I buy a Brita or Pur tank and just filter it using tap water. He said it'll save money in the long run. But the filters have to replaced every 2 months, and they cost about $5-10 per replacement.
Which way do you use? Which one saves the most money? (And by Brita, I DONT mean the faucet extension - I'm talking about the pitcher)
btw, I live in NYC right now and lived in Miami for the last 10 years!
I just bought a water cooler from brandsmart. When I added up all the Zepphylrhills Water I was buying, I could not believe it.......they say to buy a Brita if you can't drink the water from the sink, here in Miami we can't. I used to live in N.Y., the water was great, now I have to buy it,

10-pack filter for use with all Brita pitchers
A Brita filter, for instance. I don't mean will the H20 vaporize, I mean will the O2 molecules dissolved in the tap water return to the air.
I am trying to make the perfect cup of tea, and I notice that it tastes kind of flat when I use filtered water. Is this just because I used water that was sitting in the jug too long, or does the filter cause the tap water to be de-oxygenated right away?
10 points.
I asked this in Non-alcoholic drinks too, but I want to get a chemists thoughts too.
Most "filters", like your Britta filter, consist of a bed of activated carbon with a metal mesh. Activated carbon filters will remove chlorine and organics from your water. And they will remove sediment. They won't remove hardness (calcium and magnesium for example). They won't remove dissolved gases.
When you remove the chlorine and chloramines that were added by your water company a couple of things happen. The first is that bacteria grow quickly (doubling in numbers every 6 hours or so). As they grow, they consume any remaining nutrients in the water and as they die, they produce endotoxins. This will change the flavor of your water.
The second thing that happens with the water is this. As you make your tea, you are extracting chemicals from the tea leaves. Such as caffeine and catechins. These are the chemicals that give your tea it's kick and flavor. The extraction process is sensitive to the amount of chlorine and organics in your water.
As to dissolved oxygen. As you heat water, dissolved gases become less soluble and come out of solution. Those are the first few small bubbles you see as you heat your water. Tap water or filtered water, If you let your water boil fully before making your tea, then there won't be any dissolved O2 or CO2.

Water softeners, on the other hand, do remove hardness causing minerals from your water. They do this via ion exchange beds. They have resin beads with active sites that chemisorb minerals onto the surface of the beads. When all the sites are used up, the beds are regenerated via soaking in brine and then rinsing. The frequency of the regeneration is usually once every couple of days depending on the water hardness. Sound a bit complicated? It is. That is why these disposable filters don't have resin beads and don't remove hardness.

Easily replaced filter produces approximately 1,500 gallons of water before it needs replacing, or enough to last one year for a family of four

My boyfriend's appartment is the top floor of a duplex of an old house. I figured he had hard water problems when i would take a shower there and my skin would get extremely dried out, to the point of where it felt like sandpaper, and my skin NEVER reacted to anything like that.
So i had him talk to his downstairs neighbor (who is his friend) and she said, that the house had hard water. I already know i'm getting the brita filters for the kitchen... but when i was looking for shower filters i got confused and mixed up in which to get.
I looked online for reviews, etc. and most advice was that most filters that are really expensive work just as good as the moderate priced ones... but they don't say which! @_@
not only that, i'm not sure where to buy them except online or at lowes... ((which i don't want to pay shipping, have the possibility of it not working, having to pay shipping again, and go through a bunch of crap, stores are easier to return/exchange)) and lowes seems to be $10 if not more overpriced.
I don't want to spend over $60 for a filter i'll have to buy replacements for every 6 mths at $45 a replacement. But i'm fairly confident in saying that i think its mineral, especially iron.
Does anyone have recommendations? Please give a little description of experience using the filter and if you remeber, the price and/or where you bought it :)
If you have too much iron in your water, then you will get rust stains on your tub/shower and toilet. If you want to soften your water you need a water softener...I would talk to the landlord and see if he will put one in...they are expensive.

Sorry, you need a water softner, you can price them, they are pretty expensive. Also the salt or the non salt pellets also cost. If you had one installed you would also be treating the water for the down stairs people also.
Our present one, (its the best I could find), cost $900.00 and it cost $145.00 a year for cleaning the filters, and it uses about $125.00 worth of non salt pellets.
The water consumption for the 2 of us averages 6000 gal a month. Remember you will be treating the downstairs as well as the upstairs.

Consumer Talk | Sun-Sentinel Blogs: Florida among the top ten ...
A recent New York Times series called "Toxic Waters" has rightly drawn attention to the issue of drinking safe – or unsafe, as the case may be – tap water.
The reports reveals that the federal government could do a much better job of regulating the Clean Safe Water Act. Apparently, 40 percent of the U.S. community water systems are in violation, resulting in what appears to be unsafe drinking conditions. About 23 million Americans consume "low-quality" water from the tap.
Florida's dirtiest water: Florida ranks among the top ten dirtiest states, according to AOLHealth.com . The website reports that approximately 17 million Floridians have been exposed to bad tap water containing more than 100 contaminants. More than 9 million Floridians, for example, may have been in contact with barium runoff from mines. For some perspective, approximately 25,000 of those 9 million people were exposed to amounts of barium considered to be unsafe. Additionally, about 11 million state residents may have drunk water with radium-26, found around natural uranium deposits, with more than 11,000 of those coming into contact with high levels.

We are always the two fields on this page can be used as a replacement when our Brita filter pitcher (we went to an online, because we have much to drink filtered water – that ‘d of 40 gallons in a short time, but a lot of water.) There are three “I” in these filters to be observed:
First Do not let the filter dry. If the pitcher is empty, the tank is filled immediately. If the pitcher is full or partially full, the bottom of the filter is in the water and keep moist. ,SecondThe filter should be washed and soaked exactly as instructed. Some of the coal is washed in the package, and if you do not mind that you have stains in the water. This is not a big problem, something to consider. Third Never too hot or warm water through the filter.
If you follow the instructions, you will have, as we did, gallons of water that cost less and taste as good or better than buying water in plastic containers in the supermarket.
