I am deciding whether to start a fresh water fish tank or a salt water fish tank. I have heard arguments on both sides on which tank is easier to keep. I know that salt water fish are a lot prettier than fresh water fish. Is there any nice fresh water fish that are colorful like salt water fish? I have a 40 gallon tank. Any suggestions?
On another topic… I had a beta fish that died after about 2 days of switching his water. I used half Brita filtered water and half bottled water. A couple days after he died I got 2 gold fish and they died very soon also. I cleaned and changed the water with the new gold fish but used the same combo of water. Is Brita water bad for fish?
Brita water is ok for fish, no problem there. It is equal to water that has been run through a filter that contains carbon ( interesting that the Brita does the same as your tank filter yet people say it's bad) Brita filters do not remove the vast majority of minerals from the water. It will remove suspended materials but not dissolved materials and would not affect the hardness for example. So your Brita didn't do it.
As for colorful freshwater fish I would suggest you check out African cichlids and killifish. They might surprise you.

They're not getting into the drinking water, but they come out when I add tap water to the pitcher.
this usually happens when you first put a new filter in the top. just rinse out the picture and make a fresh batch. i find the specks seem to happen only in the top if i have the faucet on too hard. they won't hurt/harm you. happy new year!!

First--It's NOT STERILE...It is WASTE from your body. Is your crap sterile??? NO, neither is your pee. If it was sterile, how would a drug test work at all???? It wouldn't!!! There are red and white blood cells, bacteria and drugs in there. Ever take a multivitamin the pee really bright yellow? That's vitamin B your body didn't need. Sterile solutions don't have these things in them.
All that being said, you can drink it, not recommended, but it's usually ok if you're only "recycling" once. After that, you risk toxic shock or whatever it's called. It's the fluid that your body didn't use the first time, how many times do you think you can run it through before something goes wrong.
If you don't have any symptoms by now, you should be safe.

i hear that its bad to keep the brita filter's bottom part not covered with the water. but how bad is it if its left like that for an hour? i appreciate your help thanks!
Brita uses activated carbon to purify water through the process of adsorption, a surface phenomenon where the minerals, salts and other water materials are removed. These materials are normally deposited at the surface of the adsorbent granules. Overtime the filter gets saturated and it effectiveness decreases. So it has to be replaced regularly. As long as the filters are properly maintained, you do not have to worry about water levels in your Brita.
I know that it takes the H2O from the faucet or where-ever. There is carbon in it that catches the bad things or Elements in the water. But what is the scientific way?

The website reports that approximately 17 million Floridians have been exposed to bad tap water containing more than 100 contaminants. For some perspective, approximately 25,000 of those 9 million people were exposed to amounts of barium considered to be unsafe. Additionally, about 11 million state residents may have drunk water with radium-26, found around natural uranium deposits, with more than 11,000 of those coming into contact with high levels.
