Changed the filter and there is still black sediment in my drinking water. Without the filter, there is no black sediment.
Any advice? Besides remove the filter (not an option, I have a baby)
Check the directions on the filter package. some filters require you to run a certain amount of water through the filter to get rid of the excess charcol. Also if you are still getting the same color of water, then I would return the filter to the store and get another one as it might be defective.
Good Luck :-)
I see these black specs and always wondered what they are. They don't get into the filtered water and I've seen it in other people's Britas so I'm guessing it helps purify the water?
It's carbon from the filter. It's normal to see these. I found information on the Brita site, see below.

Does anybody who uses the Brita Maxtra jug filters notice tiny black particles in the filtered water? I think they are coming from inside the filter, and there seems to be a lot also accumulated between the filter and the jug. I change my filter every 6 weeks and clean out the jug regularly.
Does anyone know what they are and why this is happening? Is it supposed to happen? Are they harmful at all do you think?
Thanks! :)
That's normal. I've been drinking Brita water for over 10 years and it's the charcoal from the filter. It doesn't harm you in any way. Most of the time it just stays in the area on top and doesn't float into the water. Just clean your pitcher every time you use it and you'll be fine.

Brita On Tap faucet filters
Brita's most advanced water filtration system
Unlimited, great-tasting water
And what purpose do they serve?
It is called activated charcoal. It has been processed to be very porous so that all the impurities in the water you are filtering basically stick to it, and it lets the pure water flow through.
They are just tiny particles of charcoal, part of the filtering system. Though not dangerous or unhealthy, I always dump the first pitcher of water after putting in a new filter.

Black particles at the top of my Brita pitcher?
According to: http://www.brita.com.au/help/frequently_asked_questions
The black particles are tiny granules of food grade carbon that are used in the cartridge. Our carbon comes from natural sources, usually coconut shell, and can sometimes vary in shape and size. Some pieces can occasionally be unusually small and may escape into the funnel through the cartridge cap. These particles are food grade and the small amount that escape in no way affect the performance of the cartridge.
An effective means of minimising this is to re-soak the cartridge as you would with a new cartridge.
Also: If/when you buy another filter, keep the box and call the 800 number from the insert and ask them about it. My guess is that it is some kind of charcol (sp) derivative to help take out the ‘harmful’ stuff. I doubt that it is anything to worry about if you were to ingest a piece of two of it but just to be on the safe side, I would probably take the filter out and hold on to it as the brita people might send you a prepaid postage thing so that they can examine it (they will probably send you coupon too)
Pur 2 stage water filter
I am currently a student living with 5 other guys and we use Brita filter in the apartment. If you cook with Brita filter, you can not prove anything, but only if you drink water, as the taste that tap water and toilet water. It also allows the black material (the filter) at the bottom of the container. Personally, it's just weird and bad, but maybe people like to eat the particle filter. Back home, my family use Pur water filter and I must say, you can taste the difference. I think the pure taste of filtered water, as water from Fiji. It's awesome. However, buying ridiculously cute bottles of Fiji water, I have large containers of water and filtered drinking water from home to school and my apartment is my only drink. The only drawback is PUR water filter that costs more than Brita filters. And economically important, I like the cost per gallon of water (filtered). With each filter (Brita...
