I have heard on talk radio shows that the Brita Filters can last for life without ever having to be changed and that it is not true that you have to replace them.
Any one heard of this before. Is it true or false.
The have a finite lifespan. How long depends on use. Some pitchers and pipeline filters have sensors for when they need replaced but you might also notice a change in the taste of the water as the filter stops working. Read the box your filter came in and see how often they recommend changing that particular model. The filters are similar to charcoal filters for fish tanks and contain a kind of charcoal that works by soaking up the bad stuff in the water. Once the charcoal's ability to soak up stuff is exhausted, the water doesn't get filtered. It's not a myth or a scam that the filters have to be replaced.

i have a question about the shelf life on a couple of common products.
do the Brita filters ever expire? there is a sale for a three pack and it would take 6 monthes to go through that many.
also, SciDiet dog food. How long does a 30 or 40lb bag last?
Brita filters have a long shelf life, if not indefinite one. Thats why you need to soak them before using. I would not trust dog food (any bag brand) for much more than a couple months. Especially after opening. Bugs and rodents are the biggest problem. Freshness would probably suffer also after opening. I store my dog food in a plastic bin and use an 80 pound bag about every 2 months.

Improves water taste
I use a brita filter for my water...but my water (from a well) contains so much chlorine...we are in the process of getting the health department over here to check it out. My question is this...Does the Brita filter get rid of chlorine in the water...and if not do you think my baby is okay, he is 10 1/2 mo. and has been drinking this water his whole life?
We don't own this well the water company does...that is why we are fighting to get it checked...
I found this link on the Brita site for you...looks like it does make a big difference with the chlorine.
Why is chlorine added to tap water?
Treatment Plants add chlorine at P.O.E. (Point of Entry) to remove germs and ensure they don't re-appear while the water travels many miles through the pipes to your tap (P.O.U. ...Point of Use). While the amount of chlorine added is regulated and not considered dangerous, it does impair taste and odour plus there is a definite chance that it can combine with organic compounds to produce chlorinated hydrocarbons that may lead to health related problems. ***The activated carbon in the Filter will reduce the chlorine by up to 99%

Attaches easily to faucet without tools
The thing on the faucet that you push down or pull up, wont move anymore....so my adult boys cant take a shower in there...so now my youngest son, just turned 30, cant take a shower, but he uses my shower now. Both laid off no money for buying a new faucet deal and on disabled widow soc sec, no money from me to hire a plumber. Does it need to be replaced? It doesnt LOOK BROKE. It just wont switch from tub to shower head. What can we do? Please help!! I cant use my shower either, but that's because i cant get up in there now. I am 63 and finally first time in my life, have my own bathroom. SORRY IF IT SOUNDS SELFISH, BUT I DONT WANT TO SHARE MY BATHROOM. My daughter takes me to fitness usa 3 times a week where i exercise in the pool, and shower with lots of water pressure. btw, that is the other problem we have in this trailer and this park, low water pressure. the park has wells, and i think it is affecting our pipes. The rust is unreal. I have a little pool out back, and you should see the DARK RUST COLOR ON THE FILTER WHEN I CLEAN IT OUT. OH MY. One other problem: water softener quiet going through full cycle, it would start but not finish the cycle. Had son take all the old salt out of it. Now i have been looking for a "new" one on craigslist. It is difficult to live here without one. Cant drink the water, so we use a Brita filter i got at salvation army. works great. somebody told me there is this little part on the water softener (Kenmore) that gets junk in it and that makes it not work? ever heard of such a thing? is it possible that is the problem? cant afford a regular plumber for sure here in flint michigan. JUST ONE MORE THING: something is leaking under kitchen sink, and now thewood is rotted under there. Wht could my son look for to see if he could fix that? He has no plumbing experience. ONE LAST THING (I PROMISE): one whole wall in living room (where i had fish tanks) the outlets quit working. That wall is shared with the kitchen ....outlet on floor behind stove now quit working also. Other outlets on that kitchen wall DO WORK. Across from that is the kitchen sink, above the sink are 3 hanging little lamps (they were there when i moved here 3 years ago), they have QUIT WORKING, but the switch to the overhead in middle of kitchen still works (both switches are together). What do you think could be the problem there? Are they related to each other?......problem in kitchen andliving room? problem on one side of kitchen and the other? Other switches and outlets in kitchen are working fine.
Sorry about the LONG questions, thought it was my last opportunity for today and that i was out of questions. Is there an agency that would help me with this since i am 63 and disabled on low widow soc sec (600 a month)?
You know how every once in a while, there is a jar you can't open no matter how hard you try, but then along comes (insert your person here) and they can always open the jars you can't? Well I'm that person. I can open things that big grown men can't.
More to the problem, I bought a Brita water filter (the kind that attaches on to the faucet) for my apartment. I CANNOT for the life of me get the darn thing off so that I can attach my filter! (It's the kind you twist off) I've tired getting one of those rubbery grippy things and twisting, and just for the sake of it, I went on ahead and asked some friends and my husband, but we just can't get the sucker off! Does anyone know of any tricks I cna use to get my Aerator detached from my Kitchen faucet?
(An Aerator is one of those things that twist on and off of the faucet to mix in air with your water conrol the amount of water that comes from your faucet.)
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!
Try a pair of channel lock pliers and use the rubber thingy under it, and that should work.

Hopefully by now you know that you need to filter your city water. You can spend several thousand dollars if you get carried away or you can at the very least a pitcher like Brita or Pur. I recently purchased a Zero Water pitcher filter system. It advertises that its the only filtered water that meets FDA definition for purified bottled water. So if you are used to purchasing bottled water in plastic, this is the thing for you. I filter it and put it in glass bottles.
The Zero pitcher comes with a TDS meter to stick in your water and digitally read how pure it is. My tap water read 280, my distilled read 001, my Brita read 221 – but I had just put a new filter in and it needs to run a few pitchers through first. I’ll re-check it later. I had a bottle of Culligan Purified Water and it read 022, and of course – the Zero – read zero.
