The instructions say you should throw away the first two lots of water to go through a new filter. Why is this? What are the dangers of drinking the water from the first two flushes?
The carbon inside that filters the water is what kills all the bacteria. The first water that comes out of a new filter will have little particles and dust of the carbon (sometimes you can see that the water is a grayish color). That is why you should dump this water out because carbon is toxic but might not hurt you if it's so diluted. Easier to just be sure and dump it out like it says.

I feel like an idiot because it's time to change out the filter on my pitcher. It's the first time I'm changing it. I opened the filter and have it soaking in the water and have taken out the trash with the package with the instructions on it...
I tried twisting the old filter, but it barely budged and I don't want to get it stuck.
I have the vintage pitcher if that makes a difference.
Just push it up from the bottom

I just got a Brita Maxtra water filter. The first time I used it the water was blue, the second time a lighter blue. The third time the water looked normal and clear. I don't understand why the water the first time was blue - I followed the instructions to the letter but there was no mention of the filtered water being blue. Have I got a dodgy water filter or is this normal and others have experienced the same thing?
There should be no reason for the water to turn blue. Contact the manufacturer. They should be very interested in your experience.

Ok so I have not been using the unit that these go with for too long, just got it today. But just based on my feeling of the product, I highly doubt that they are very effective in actually filtering anything other than lint or other large debris. Its a loose felt material on the outside. The inside of it feels to be some stiff plastic or thin metal of some sort to hold the shape, with some pieces of carbon or charcoal in there. There are not a lot of actual carbon or charcoal chunks like you would see in a brita filter, and they do not do anything but sit at the bottom of the "filter" so I honestly dont see how they could do anything. We have a brita filter on our sink, so when I fill the unit, I use that and will use the rest of the 4 filters I got for the unit, but do not believe I will be purchasing more.

Black particles at the top of my Brita pitcher?
According to: http://www.brita.com.au/help/frequently_asked_questions
The black particles are tiny granules of food grade carbon that are used in the cartridge. Our carbon comes from natural sources, usually coconut shell, and can sometimes vary in shape and size. Some pieces can occasionally be unusually small and may escape into the funnel through the cartridge cap. These particles are food grade and the small amount that escape in no way affect the performance of the cartridge.
An effective means of minimising this is to re-soak the cartridge as you would with a new cartridge.
Also: If/when you buy another filter, keep the box and call the 800 number from the insert and ask them about it. My guess is that it is some kind of charcol (sp) derivative to help take out the ‘harmful’ stuff. I doubt that it is anything to worry about if you were to ingest a piece of two of it but just to be on the safe side, I would probably take the filter out and hold on to it as the brita people might send you a prepaid postage thing so that they can examine it (they will probably send you coupon too)
