do plastic water kettle/boilers cause cancer? Or brita filters in fridge?

I have a proctor-silex one and I'm worried about it causing cancer since it directly comes in contact with the water I boil

Also, anyone know if brita filters are safe to put in the fridge?


If the products you use are made by a reputable company, then you can be sure they are as safe as it is possible to be today.

New Kettle


I use a water filter for my water and use this to fill my kettle, why am I still getting limescale in it?

Basically I use a Brita water filter and I change the cartridge once a month, I use the filtered water in the kettle.
I just opened my kettle to have a look inside and I have some limescale floating in the kettle...why is this??

I pay like £4 for each cartridge so why am I still getting limescale?


The filters are only a basic filter. It is not totally microscopic.

I live in a hard water area and the ones I use are only charcoal ones, but they have drastically reduced the scaling in the kettle by about 90%. They make a big difference to the taste of the water as well.

Also as D says they should be changed regularly. I change mine every 30 days as it says. I get mine in threes which cost about £7 so it's about 8p a day which is nothing. Less than 50 cigarette papers!

Water filter cartridges?

Can I use Brita filter cartridges in my Kenwood filter kettle and Kenwood filter cartridges in my Brita water filter machine?
Are they interchangeable?

The Brita filtered water just has less calcium carbonate, Chlorine and some heavy metals. The fact that these are being removed fom the water is a good thing, so not to worry. The only time I would be concerned is using rainwater harvested water, the mineral content is substantially lower than ground water, you would eventually find mineral leaching from the body gradually. Also the bacterial content of rainwater harvested water is rather high and needs to be sterilised thoroughly. Hope this helps. HP
