water filters can be recycled

By Tao Oliveto, Carrboro, NC

We’re all headed back to the taps to keep plastic out of our production and waste streams and keep dioxin and other plastic chemicals out of our bodies. Tap water is safe, though many of us are choosing to further purify what comes from our faucet with pitcher and counter-top water filters. There are many affordable and effective options available and you can start here . I use a counter-top unit by Living Water Systems .

But wait - if you are one of the many people using the Clorox owned, popular Brita filters, keep reading! Those filters, replaced with great frequency, could and should be collected and recycled. In Europe, the original Brita GmbH company, has created a take-back recycling program for its filter cartridges. They are collected at in-store sites and shipped to Brita’s recycling center, where they are dismantled and the components reused. But here in North America, there is not recycling process in place. Beth, from FakePlasticFish.com took on the issue in full force, initiating the Take Back the Filter Campaign. Please go sign the petition now and take millions of plastic and carbon filters out of our wastestream.

Lack of Alerts: Drinking water issue: “Brown” water - City of ...

.’.Hey folks, I just had to re-post this one, sorry for being such a flamer: ) The man said ” Brown Water”  and I know he is for real.  I personaly have seen this  phenomena, and I may even have tasted it, uuuggg… IDk,  What say you? .’.Carl

“They never put one out ever, that’s the problem I have looked for the media advisory when the break happens, online, phone calls to city hall, dgs, police…. dead ends everywhere, oh ya after hours or a weekend (5pm try calling dgs, your battery will go dead on your house phone or cell phone because no one picks up). ie. a few months ago a break occurred at 8am or so during the week, most people are going to work and off to school they had no idea that a break occurred (it was fixed around 3pm)(water brown as usual for an hour. So when my neighbor came home I had to go tell her not to let her kids drink the water yet because there was yet another water break earlier in the day. 2 Days later another water break occurred on Lakeview Av. then the one in-front of the new fire house where they had brand new pavement which had to be dug up. ( again no media advisory)This time our house was out of water for 1 1/2 days. Im not looking to bash anyone at city hall or the dgs crews-there just should be some better communication. : Comment by NorthEnd Concerned”
