Design an experiment to test drinking water filter cartridge?

I would like to perform a test to see if my Brita Filter cartridge is still effective. What would be your suggestion in designing an experiment to test the water filtered by these cartridge?

I have access to use microscope, petri dishes, incubator, x-ray diffraction machine, gas chromatography, pH meter, and regular chemical experiment equipments.

thanks in advance

You need to test the water before and after filtration. This will let you determine what, if anything, the filter removed (or added) to (from) the water.

The microscope can be used to detect particulates. The petri dishes, and incubator can be used for microbial (bacteria and fungi) growth, but the shouldn't be any microbes in your drinking water before you filter it. The govenment has a TMDL of 0 for all microbes.

I'm not sure how X-ray difraction works and I believe gas chromatography take a small amount of a solid material and vaporizes it, so I don't think it would work.

You can test pH before and after, but that won't give you very much information.

Brita Filter water for a fresh water a aquarium!?

So i have filled my tank with Brita filtered water. We have very hard tap water round here so i thought it might help get some of the bad stuff out. I did an ammonia test just because i was curious and i found that tap water actually contains less ammonia than the filtered water!...wtf? Why is that?

How old is the filter? All of the nitrites and nitrates which can be as high as 60 ppm are now decomposing in your filter. Once a filter has overloaded the filtered water will show a higher reading.

ALSO I learned this the hard way, it isn't ammonia but amonium a version of which most filters will not filter out. This too as well as Amonuonum (?) all dirivitives of ammonia will all show as positive and a higher reading than what it actually is.

Is there a way to test the tapwater?

I drink about 2 litres of this a day (filtered with Brita) and I'm wondering if there's anyway to test if it's safe or not. .. I mean obviously it's not lethal, but I would like to know if it's safe to drink.

Is this a good water filter?

Are the Brita Water Filter Pitchers good, have you used it and if so would do you think it really cleaned the water. Is there a device that I can purchase to test the water after its been through the Brita water pitcher?
My kitchen faucet is detachable and one that cannot be fitted with a water filter, thats why I am considering the pitcher type filter.

The Brita Water Pitcher claims to take all of the "gunk" out of the water that you drink. Personally, even with a brand new filter I never thought that the water out of a Brita Water Pitcher tasted very good. Add to that the fact that the filters need replaced 1-2 times a month depending how much water you drink, and the fact that the pitcher does not hold much water (nowhere near what you should drink each day), and it turned out to be a dissappointing solution for our household.

As for your question about testing water afterwards, Google search drinking water test strips and you will find inexpensive strips that will allow you to test the quality of the water that you clean with the Brita Pitcher, or the water straight out of your faucet.

I live in the SF Bay area, and just moved to a very old house. How can I test the water to see if it's safe?

The home I'm renting was built in 1928. My concern is the water I'm using will have lead in it from the pipes. Is there a way (inexpensive please!!!, I'm a medical student with NO money) I can test the water for impurities, such as lead and bacteria? I have a brita filter pitcher that I use for drinking, but don't know if that's enough for me and my toddler. Also, I'm concerned about washing the dishes and showering with the non-filtered. Any information is GREATLY appreciated!!
Wow. I appreciate your feedback, but a few hundred dollars is definately something I don't have.

First off...the water quality in the bay area is excellent compared to other parts of the country. You can call the provider of your source of water to request testing. This is usually free of charge. I live in the East Bay and EBMUD is the provider of water. They do testing free of charge for there customers. Chances of bacteria in the water would be highly unlikely because of the chlorine content in the water. As for the lead...its possible from the old pipes but very tiny. Your best bet is to run the tap for a few minutes before using it. Use the filter. And don't worry about the other stuff. Your water is safe.

  • Kangen Ionized Water a Scam? My Brita Water Filter worked just as ...

I was shocked when Rick Wong tested my water for alkalkinity and it had the same Ph level as Alkanized Water from a Water Ionizer…

Why did my filtered water test alkaline?

I was in desbelief and thought, what a scam alkaline water systems are.   My filtered water tested with the same alkalkinity (9.5) as alkaline water produced by a water ionizer.

I had to repeat the Water Test Again and Again

We attempted the test again and wouldn’t you know it…  My filtered water was very acidic, just like regular tap water.  So I was wrong, Brita Water Filters do not have the same effect.

Why did my Brita Filter give off False Readings?

The only explanation I have is that tap water’s Ph levels vary from time to time and while my filtered water tested Alkaline at 9.5 one day, it has since tested acidic every time thereafter.   So Alkaline Water Systems are NOT a scam!

Beginning of an Investigation into Water

I live on the Plateau in the heart of Montreal, about ten minutes on foot from Mount Royal Park, one of North America’s most beautiful urban parks. As you may realize from my previous post, I love water. I am intrigued by the freshwater springs coming out of the limestone in Mount Royal Park. I wonder whether spring water from what Montrealers call “the mountain” is safe to drink.

Over the last few weeks, I have done basic tests in Quebec and New Hampshire  of tap water, filtered tap water, and spring and river water in different locations. All of this is intended to provide a basis for comparisons. This morning, I did two basic tests of water quality on Mount Royal.

I chose two locations on Mount Royal where I observed water springing directly from a gap between rocks. One was just north of the bottom of the stairs leading from Peel Street up to the Chalet on Mount Royal; the second was just south of the bottom of the stairs. I considered a third possibility, in a ditch on the road just south of the television antenna at the summit, but given all the orange paint sprayed on vegetation in the ditch, it seemed to me this was more likely a leaking underground pipe than a spring. Also, I avoided testing water right after heavy rainstorms when these springs are far bigger than usual.
