Is it safe to drink the black stuff (carbon?) in the water from the brita pitcher?

every time i pour it out and pour tap water through the filter i always find little specks of black things. is it safe to drink or should i return it?

it's perfectly safe. Sometimes they give the same activated charcoal to patients in hospitals to help with some ailments. Not to worry. Little tiny specs of it won't make a difference.

black specks in my brita water?

The filter is new and I never noticed this before until now. I read the instructions on how to use a new filter by soaking it in water for 15 minutes and I did that.
Now my water has black specks?! Do I need to soak it again or do I just need to dump it out and get a new water filter like a different brand?!
And what are those black specks? Is it bad if I drank the water that contained those black stuff.

my friend has the same problem with her brita filter. but hers also has black specks on the top where you pour the water in. looks like pepper.

The specks are actually little pieces of carbon. It's not dangerous at all. The inside of the filter is filled with those little black pieces of carbon. The carbon is actually what absorbs all of the chemicals from the water.

Brita pitcher leaked into the water?

My mom usually uses a brita water filter and one day i looked in a cup of water that was just boiled and there was some black stuff in there from the filter. I don't think she aligned the cartridge thing into the slot and thats why some of its leaking. I don't know how long that has been happening but if i drink it is it a problem?

Not a problem!!! I have a Brita water pitcher too and all that black stuff is, is carbon. Carbon is what is in the filter to filter all the water out.

Brita pitcher has mold?

I just bought two slim style Brita Pitcher, and I find after 2-3 days I have mold under the lid and also around the rim of the filter. I cleaned them carefully, and after 2-3 days the mold is there again. Is there a way to avoid this? Brita says we have to keep water in the pitcher to keep the filter wet. Will this be bad for our health? I am sure they are mold, not the black stuff from the filter.

You know how you're not supposed to have an aquarium or fishbowl in direct sunlight? Same thing - try not to keep the pitcher out of direct sunlight.

If the pitcher is cracked replace it otherwise soak in hydrogen peroxide and wash well. You shouldn't have a problem with gross stuff growing in the water if the water is circulated frequently. If the water starts to get older you can water plants with it.

Alternately, you could store the pitcher in the fridge.

Some donation Ideas for Haiti

For those who are contemplating sending stuff to Haiti you should consider a few things. Send toiletries. Think about it. Homes are destroyed and the bowels do not wait for construction. People need to relieve themselves and will need to clean up after themselves. donating toiletries will help to prevent waterborne and contact diseases that spread due to unsanitary conditions. If you have the means, portable generators AND portable solar chargers are a good idea. People are without power. Haiti is blessed to be somewhere with much sunshine. people with cell phones and radios are going to need power in order to get news in and out of Haiti. Solar chargers can keep communication devices up and running. The ability to communicate is important. Generators are obvious but need fuel to run which could limit their effectiveness. long term though they will be needed once the initial triage is done...
