ok Im maken a home made water filter for tap water..i bought Activated carbon for aquariums, but when i compared it to brita water filter carbon, it seems the brita has much smaller granulated carbon, plus something added in, like tiny white pebbles, i don't know what that is.. i am thinking to use two kinds of carbon, one to get rid of bigger material in water (microscopic size) and one kind to be able to absorb even smaller micron size material... I figure AC (activated carbon) for fish tanks be good to filter larger stuff, but where can i find the kind of AC to absorb real smaller material?
Your method will not work to do the same tasks as one of the original Brita filters.
Besides being of smaller particle size (with a greater surface area), the active carbon in a Brita filter has been silverized. This is not an easy job to do at home. In addition, it contains an Ion Exchange Resin (the tiny white pebbles).

I'm not cheap or anything--I just figured what the heck. I drink a gallon of water a day--the basin holds way more than a gallon, so most of it ends up going down the sink. My mom uses it to water plants when it gets full and needs to be emptied but when she's not home and it gets full and she likes it to run all day, I've been saving the water in jugs. She said it might not be safe even w/ Brita because Brita says nothing about getting bacteria out of the water. What do you think?
Maybe I could boil it if there's a chance for bacteria in it?
Why would you even WANT to drink that water-? Are you serious-?? Why not use the Britta filter on ordinary water-??? The humidifier takes water out of the air which is filled with dust particles, mold spores, pollen, and yes - bacteria. Who knows how much the filter will remove-??

Drinking Water Filters
We normally drink bottled water at home. We use filtered tap water for our hot water. I was just wondering if tap watered filtered by Brita charcoal is safe to drink. My wife says activated charcoal does not filter out organisms or the tiny amout of parasites that might be in the municipal tap water.
I checked the label for the bottled water in the grocery store. They usually say it's been ozonated and filtered by activated charcoal. Even the water from the spring water says it's been filtered. That seems to tell me you need to filter out the organic impurities with charcoal and treat it with something to kill off the germs. Is that correct? Thanks.
Activated charcoal does clean the water to some extent. It will never be completely cleaned of unwanted minerals and microscopic organisms unless you distill it and pour it into a sterile container. But don't worry about it. We probably all ingest quite a bit of dirt and organisms without realizing it. Just think. When was the last time you ate without washing your hands first? Or handled money before you ate French fries? There were probably more germs in one dirty finger than the germs that pass through the charcoal filter in a month.
So relax. Just wash your hands before meals. The water that's been filtered is already much cleaner than the tap water. And the lowly tap water has already been treated and chlorinated. I know of some 80 and 90 year old people that have drunk tap water all their lives.

Anything else I should know? Thanks
if you live in a city in America, there is NO NEED for one, as all potable water passes rigid tests for quality, unlike other countries, where you REALLY need one.
I live in Detroit suburb. We use Brita filter (pitcher) for drinking water. Lately the water has started to develop a green algae (I am not sure if it is indeed algae, however - same green as you see if water stands for long time). Changing a newer filter does not help. Should we get our water quality checked, and how one goes about in doing so? Thank you very much in advance.

The Right Brita Water Filter System For Home
So you already know that you want a water filtration system of some sort in your home, and that you want to stick with the trusted Brita name, but you just don’t know if you want the Brita faucet mount system or a Brita water filter jug that goes in the fridge. Well if you are just not sure of what sort of Brita water filter system is going to be right for your home, then you are going to want to read on to find out more and make the best decision.
The Jug Brita water filter system
The jug is one of the most popular options for a Brita water filter system . This is for a few different reasons, but mainly because it is so quick and convenient. One has to only fill up the jug and the tap water in it will transfer through to the bottom as it does filtering. This Brita water filter system is of great advantage for homes with only a person or two living there.
The problem with this water filter system is that it runs out so quick. You are going to have to make sure that you are filling it back up frequently, in order to always have fresh water on hand.
