Does anybody who uses the Brita Maxtra jug filters notice tiny black particles in the filtered water? I think they are coming from inside the filter, and there seems to be a lot also accumulated between the filter and the jug. I change my filter every 6 weeks and clean out the jug regularly.
Does anyone know what they are and why this is happening? Is it supposed to happen? Are they harmful at all do you think?
Thanks! :)
That's normal. I've been drinking Brita water for over 10 years and it's the charcoal from the filter. It doesn't harm you in any way. Most of the time it just stays in the area on top and doesn't float into the water. Just clean your pitcher every time you use it and you'll be fine.

how come i sometimes get black particles in my water?
No need to panic. These are just small fragments of carbon which have escaped from the filter. They can be caused by rubbing of the carbon particles during transport and general handling. It’s quite normal.
That’s why Brita recommend that the first two fillings shouldn’t be used – although, if you did use them it still wouldn’t be a major problem. The contents of the Brita cartridges are food grade quality and will do you no harm whatsoever – the taste might not be as pleasant as you’d wish for, that’s all.
Soak the cartridge thoroughly when you first use it and shake it whilst immersed under water. That’ll encourage any loose carbon particles to be released and will help to avoid any further carbon particles being released during the useful lifetime of your cartridge.

Brita Water Filter - What Are The Black Particles?
Lots of people are using Brita water filters and sometimes they will find small black particles in their water. It’s absolutely nothing to worry about. The standard Brita Maxtra filter cartridge works by passing the water through a filter which contains activated charcoal. The small black particles are just tiny flakes of charcoal which have been displaced - usually during transportation. That’s why you most often see them just after you’ve changed the cartridge. The charcoal is perfectly safe - it’s food grade and would do you know harm at all if you were to swallow it. However, if you really don’t like it then just run a couple of passes of water theough your filter cartridge and that should do the trick.
