Clean it with Bleach, and rinse well. Algea grows when the PH level and the alkalinity level are perfect for growth.
Plan to clean out your Brita (including the filter holder) regularly to prevent this happening again.

(Los Angeles) Every now and then, the water in my brita water filter turns green at the bottom. I've cleaned the filter many times and changed the filter itself. Is my filter growing algae or something or is the filter not catching something coming out of my faucet?!!
This is the second time it's happened and I have not exceeded the lifespan of both filters. Is this green stuff going to cause me to get sick? I may have drank a cup or two without noticing.
I would guess that the green color is from copper pipes and probably not from algae unless the source is not filtering it out. Algae would only be there and green if it had a light source. It would not live without light and some food and so would be brown. Oxides of copper would be green, like an old penny, like the inside of old copper pipes which is the only material that most municipalities allow in the US for home water service. Always struck me as funny, here anyway, that the town can run PE pipe to your house, frequently from iron pipe, yet they require copper house lines with silver based soldier, no more lead (for good reason).
Almost every day I have to scrub a green ring out of the bottom of my Brita filter water pitcher. It's like it's algae or something, but it grosses me out. How can I stop it?
It's one of the drawbacks of the Brita; I get it, too.
You should wash it with hot water and soap, not just remove the ring from the bottom. Also scrub the plastic insert.
I live in Detroit suburb. We use Brita filter (pitcher) for drinking water. Lately the water has started to develop a green algae (I am not sure if it is indeed algae, however - same green as you see if water stands for long time). Changing a newer filter does not help. Should we get our water quality checked, and how one goes about in doing so? Thank you very much in advance.
I have a plastic water filter (Brita) you just fill under the tap and water collects into the jug. I clean it regularly but after a bit it still gets a sort of faint algae taste. I'm sure it can't be good, but does anyone know about this, and have you ever heard of warnings against water filters?
If algae is growing, then other microbes are growing. Common sense tells you something is amiss.
Why are you using a Brita - what is your water source? A Brita is pretty much just an activated carbon filter that is used on city water to remove chlorine and other halogens. It also has some use in removing heavy metals.
If you're on well water, the only reason to use a Brita would be for removing heavy metals and organics, such as gasoline, pesticides, etc.
When activated carbon filters are "full", they must be changed. That seems to be a problem with these - how do you know when they are full? Do you change it once a month, every 6 months, or what?
If you are on city water, and you change your filter out at proper intervals, then every so often (once a week or so), pour boiling water through the Brita to sterilize it. Anything above 165 or so should kill the algae and other bugs without damaging the unit. Use 2 flushes at first to be sure.
