sounds like your pitcher may be pitted and you are not cleaning it enough to prohibit the growth, try some vinegar

And since your answering that, how do those filters work?
Activated charcoal.
Works as follows:
Charcoal is carbon. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. According to Encyclopedia Britannica:
The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300-2,000 square metres per gram. These so-called active, or activated, charcoals are widely used to adsorb odorous or coloured substances from gases or liquids.
The word adsorb is important here. When a material adsorbs something, it attaches to it by chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding sites. When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and are trapped.
Activated charcoal is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ("organic" chemicals), as well as things like chlorine. Many other chemicals are not attracted to carbon at all -- sodium, nitrates, etc. -- so they pass right through. This means that an activated charcoal filter will remove certain impurities while ignoring others. It also means that, once all of the bonding sites are filled, an activated charcoal filter stops working. At that point you must replace the filter.

They have different sizes, but basically, you fill the top of the pitcher and the water filters down to the lower half of the pitcher and gets filtered by the charcoal filter in between the top and bottom parts.
I conducted a taste test and I could definitely tell the difference between regular tap water and the brita filtered water.
The only bad part about the Brita filter is that it can only hold so much and you have to wait for the water to trickle down before you can pour it into a glass or whatever.
Also, spring water or other bottled water might taste better than the brita filter. Another bad thing is that the filters cost about 6 dollars and last about 3 months per the instructions.

Large 80-ounce pitcher turns tap water into healthier, great-tasting drinking water
Measures 6 by 3-1/2 by 10-4/5 inches; 10-year limited warranty
My water in my pitcher seems to pick up the tastes from other foods in the fridge. Has anyone else had this happen to there pitchers? If so, how in the world do I get it stop?
Baking soda, or change the filter on the pitcher.
I notice if I leave the water for too long (don't drink it within a couple days) it will start tasting like the fridge. so... change the water out if it's a couple days old.
I have a Brita water pitcher and black flecks always go through the filter in the filtered water. I've heard its the carbon? but still I would really like it to not be there. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?
Did you soak the filter before using? It's important the new filter be soaked for 15 minutes before using. That usually helps to get rid of the loose carbon flecks. I use a jar so the filter is completely under water. (discard soaking water)
