I have a Brita pitcher, and I've had it for about a year. And how do I know if its "out of date" and time to buy a new one???
Mine has an indicator that turns when you need to buy a new charcoal (or whatever) insert. If that's the kind you have, just buy a 3 pack and use one. Much cheaper than a whole new system.

Funny tasting water, Brita just removes ' suspended particulates' (coffee is a great example) but the main ingredients in urine - urea and ammonia would pass through just fine. another interesting thing about urine is that caffeine and testosterone pass right through

Grandma wants one...which one should we get?
get Grandma what she wants.... I have the Britta... and I love it... I like my OWN water, but for the chlorine they add here... so my Britta does just fine as far as taste goes.... and maybe that's what Grandma is after, too.... havent' seen the bigger one yet... mine's just the 'standard' one for the fridge.... I use the water from mine to refill 'water bottles' and always have some at hand in the fridge....
other one that my kid has is the PUR... and it's on the faucet... he likes it a LOT, too.... but Grandma asked for a pitcher, so get that for her (*also get a few replacement cartridges.. they're kinda costly, since they come in three-packs)....
I need a water purifier for cheap. I dont want to spend over 20$ where can I buy it? what's a good brand? i was looking at brita ones and people gave it bad reviews saying the lid would come loose too frequently. If I can buy it online (link would be ideal answer)

If you only have $20 to spend a jug like a brita one may be the only answer for you tho I have found a website which has lots of different types of filter and the pros and cons of each one - hopw this helps you to decide which is best for you
BTW I have a tower type filter which sits on my bench - the filter lasts me more than 6 months and I reckon is the best and cheapest option
Perhaps you may be able to pick one up on ebay or similar for the price you want to pay - it would be worth a try

(Or as someone said if you use a lot of water, investing in a filter for the faucet is also ideal, and that filter needs to be changed too of course)
