They are tricky! Warm it up first. These units have a tendency to be too brittle when cold. The easiest way I've found is to take out the filter and then pull up from that chamber. Or, on the back you have a little gap to work with to tug up. Good luck! :-)

They look like mold spots and its in the filter where the screen is and it just looks like something I don't want my water to be running over...
Not the electronic screen, the filter screen on the BOTTOM of the filter when you take it out.

I'm talking about the kitchen appliance kind of hot water heater (the kind you use to heat water for tea, for instance), not the household appliance one.
It gets these buildups of white stuff along the bottom over time.
What is this stuff? Is it calcium deposits, or something from the local tap water? (I use Brita-filtered water, so I don't see why there should be deposits).
It's coming from somewhere, but I don't know where!
Is it safe?
Should I clean it out? How frequently?

It's calcium. Filters don't filter everything out, as they would have us believe. Use vinegar every couple of weeks, depending on how much calcium you get.

Weve been using the Brita pitcher for about 2 weeks now. Last night I poured me a glass in a white cup. A few minutes later there was a black ring of the charcoal dust at the bottom of the cup. Is that ok to drink? I know it says to run water through it a few times before using and weve done that.

youll be fine. you can ingest the charcoal in small amounts and nothing will happen to you. charcoal is a natural filter so it will pass through your system without any worries. i once asked my boss(who is a chemist) about this and he explained the whole process to me. i dont exactly remember what happens but i do remember that youll be fine. just rinse out your water filter or just replace it. i have been using the brita water filters for years and im still alive.

Is there a difference between the Blue filter and the White filter?

i have a Brita filter and have only seen the white ones. If it fits into your pitcher, it might be just for cosmetic purposes. There's many kinds of pitches sizes and colors.
