All the water in my aparetment is softened and instead of having to go out and buy water all teh time i bought a PUR water filter that hooks to the faucet and also a Britta water container so I use both filters on my water but it still tastes salty and softened.

Brita will filter out some things but not sodium. You must purchase a much more expensive system for that as described in other answers. I do agree with a previous post in buying Brita instead of bottles. This is much healthier for you physically and economically.

We are trying to buy fish and a fish tank for cheap, i have a plastic container for them already, and i was wondering can they live with just fish food and water filtered by a britta water filter? if no, what can we do to get fish for cheap.

My beta fish lived happily in a plastic tank with Brita water through my stay in college. Just make sure that you let it get to room temp before you put your fish buddies in.

I have a Britta jug type water filter with a timer in the lid which tells me to fit a new filter about every month.
How accurate is this device or is it designed to sell more of the very expensive filter cartridges before they are actually needed .
Without this timer how long will a filter cartridge actually work properley?

A month is about right. Over the month you will see differences in the taste and the speed of how long the water takes to filter.

Im confused because surely if the filter is blocked then water will not pass through, so surely the filter is effective until water stops passing through. Why will the impurities suddenly start passing through after a month if the gaps in the filter are too fine for them to fit?

Yes, you have to change it. A filter has lots of tiny pores through which water can move, but minerals and other impurities can't. Once these pores all get clogged by the impurities, it is no longer an effective filter.
