Ok, I'm not sure where you live and all, but where I live the water is very hard and full of chemicals. I went out and bought a Brita water filter, both the kind you put on your faucet and the kind that you just fill up (like a pitcher). Let me tell you when I went to replace those filters ... ICK! I was so glad my kids weren't drinking that water. A replacement filter typically comes in a package of three and is about $30 dollars (that's about an estimate because I get mine at BJ's and you can get like six to ten for like $40 dollars, so I save like $10 to $20 bucks). A filter lasts about hmmm ... three months with my yucky water (there is a little thing on the faucet filter that tells you when you need to replace the filter). The pitcher one lasts about 40 fill ups. So in my opinion, YES, it's worth it and much cheaper than buying bottle water (plus you'd be helping the environment because you wouldn't be buying more plastic).
Always do your research and compare. Good luck

I took out my old brita filter, and the four holes in the bottom had green dots in it, not just the black I was expecting for the carbon. So I thought it was mold. I bought a new package of filters, and ALL FOUR fillters had the green little balls in them. Does anyone else have these little green balls in their filter ( in bottom four holes) . Is yours just black ( carbon) and I thus have mold?? Help!!!
I've been using a Brita water filter pitcher for several years, and I don't recall ever seeing green dots in the filter cartridges. Their FAQ section says spare filters should be kept in a cool, dry, place, but they should last indefinitely.
You can send Brita's customer support a question at http://www.brita.com/index_us.html , or call them: 1-800-24-27482. (This is contact info. for U.S. customers.) Ask them what's going on! If they say this is normal, please post that info. Thanks.

I have a Brita filter, and I just finished using my first removable cartridge that you place in the filter. But what do you do with the used Brita filters? It feels weird to put it in the trash and create more waste when I initially bought the Brita filter to minimize my plastic bottle usage and be more environment-friendly.
Any thoughts?
I just put mine in the trash. You still saved a load of plastic by not using bottles.
I was wondering what was better and why. I just bought a Brita Filter and the water tastes fine, but is it as good in purity as Poland Spring? and if not, are the things that have not been filtered using the Brita making me any less healthy? Thanks.
.Poland Spring has Spring water and purified water. Purified water is much cleaner than water that is simply filtered. Brita is a simple filter and barely does much at all. It is enough for taste and odor but not much at all for health.
Poland Spring has a great purification process. However buying individual bottles or getting the 5 gallon ones with a cooler can be a hasle. This is one reason why Brita is popular. That and it tends to be cheaper than a water service like Poland Spring offers. However there is a better choice. eSpring is the highest rated home water purification system available. By year 2 it is cheaper per gallon than Britta and any water service out there.

I agree, great taste. I thought everything was fine. But after three sessions of electrodermal screening, we couldn't figure out why my body was full of petrochemicals when I showed up clear for everything else. I kept insisting that it wasn't my water since my filter was relatively new, but I finally had it tested just to make sure. There it was! The water was free of all bacteria, parasites, fungus, viruses, etc, but NOT free of petrochemicals. You can't cleanse your body when your water is full of chemicals!

Will filtering my cooking water through the Brita take care of that? If I have to buy water to cook beans, it sort of negates any cost savings.
