How to clean my Brita Faucet Filter?

My Brita Faucet Filter has gotten some build-up in the creases (on the exterior, not part of the filtration system). The switch that you use to switch from filtered to regular water has so much build-up that I can barely change it. The build-up in the creases is kind of a brownish-orange.

I've soaked it in vinegar but the problem still exists. My wife wants to WD-40 the switch! Any better ideas?

Do Brita filters remove fluoride?

Do Brita filters remove fluoride?

Brita water filter container formed a green algae-bacteria like film along the bottom. How do I clean this?

What exactly is this green film? Is it dangerous and is it preventable?

Clean it with Bleach, and rinse well. Algea grows when the PH level and the alkalinity level are perfect for growth.

Plan to clean out your Brita (including the filter holder) regularly to prevent this happening again.

What is this green water in my Brita Filter?!!?

(Los Angeles) Every now and then, the water in my brita water filter turns green at the bottom. I've cleaned the filter many times and changed the filter itself. Is my filter growing algae or something or is the filter not catching something coming out of my faucet?!!

This is the second time it's happened and I have not exceeded the lifespan of both filters. Is this green stuff going to cause me to get sick? I may have drank a cup or two without noticing.

I would guess that the green color is from copper pipes and probably not from algae unless the source is not filtering it out. Algae would only be there and green if it had a light source. It would not live without light and some food and so would be brown. Oxides of copper would be green, like an old penny, like the inside of old copper pipes which is the only material that most municipalities allow in the US for home water service. Always struck me as funny, here anyway, that the town can run PE pipe to your house, frequently from iron pipe, yet they require copper house lines with silver based soldier, no more lead (for good reason).

How clean is tap watered filtered by the brita charcoal filters?

We normally drink bottled water at home. We use filtered tap water for our hot water. I was just wondering if tap watered filtered by Brita charcoal is safe to drink. My wife says activated charcoal does not filter out organisms or the tiny amout of parasites that might be in the municipal tap water.

I checked the label for the bottled water in the grocery store. They usually say it's been ozonated and filtered by activated charcoal. Even the water from the spring water says it's been filtered. That seems to tell me you need to filter out the organic impurities with charcoal and treat it with something to kill off the germs. Is that correct? Thanks.

Activated charcoal does clean the water to some extent. It will never be completely cleaned of unwanted minerals and microscopic organisms unless you distill it and pour it into a sterile container. But don't worry about it. We probably all ingest quite a bit of dirt and organisms without realizing it. Just think. When was the last time you ate without washing your hands first? Or handled money before you ate French fries? There were probably more germs in one dirty finger than the germs that pass through the charcoal filter in a month.

So relax. Just wash your hands before meals. The water that's been filtered is already much cleaner than the tap water. And the lowly tap water has already been treated and chlorinated. I know of some 80 and 90 year old people that have drunk tap water all their lives.

What are the blacks specs in my Brita filter pitcher?

They're not actually in the pictcher but in the filter part - the part you put the water in. It comes from the part that the water filters through. It kind of freaks me out. We rinsed out the filter part by "sloshing" the water around to clean out the filter but more came out. We've only had it about a month!

Make sure you soak your Brita filter in water for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off in clean water before you install it.

If there are still some carbon pieces floating in your water dump the first pitcher of water and try again.

Either way, these little specs pose no threat but they can be annoying.

  • Brita Filter Jug - Because Clean Water Is Good For You

Although I never really believed the hype about bottled water being somehow better for you than plain old tap water, I must admit that I was more than a little surprised to discover that it can, in certain cases, be bad for you. It seems that some mineral waters have a relatively high salt content - which is not good for you if you have high blood pressure. Just to check, I picked up three different brands in my local supermarket and sure enough, the sodium content varied by as much as an order of magnitude. Personally I prefer to use a Brita filter jug  anyway - it’s a lot cheaper.

Fresh, clean and Zuvo-inated | MNN - Mother Nature Network

The H2O-savvy folks at Zuvo know how much Americans love bottled water — 60 million plastic bottles are landfilled daily in the U.S. They also know about the concern over the health-compromising quality of tap water. Although highly regulated, tap water can contain a nasty brew of parasites, chemical pollutants, lead and other unsavories like, as the  New York Times  recently pointed out,  weed killers . Most importantly, the folks at Zuvo know that the water-guzzling public loves a good bargain . While a $300 water filtering device may seem spendy, it’s actually a steal. With proper use, Zuvo-treated water comes out to around $.06 a gallon compared to $1/gallon for bottled water and $.20/gallon for pitcher-filtered water systems like Brita.  The Zuvo Purator uses a supercharged, five-step filtration process that involves ozone, UV light exposure,...
