Is it normal to have black specks in your Brita water?

I got a new Brita. I followed all the guidelines of soaking a new filter and rinsing it and letting it filter water a few times before actually using it. But there is black specs floating in my filtered water that I know is coming from the filter. Is this normal? And what is it?

Takes a few before they disappear!

brita pitcher water still has ton of black specks?

i recently purchased a brita filter/pitcher....i've been using it for a week now and there are still A TON of black specks in the water both on top and in the bottom. i followed the instructions exactly so i dont know what the deal in... do i have a defective product or something? i heard that the black specks were supposed to go away after a few usages but I've used it a very good number of times now and those specks are still there.

please help.

I use and like my PUR pitcher. I previously used a brita, but it doesn't remove as much stuff as the pur, and we have nasty tap water here. it routinely fails health inspections. We are supposed to boil our water before drinking. The PUR filters recommend soaking for 15+ minutes and rinsing, and pouring out the first pitcher before first use. That works to remove all that "carbon dust" from my filters. if brita uses "dustier" carbon, maybe that is why you still have specs. In any case. they won't hurt you, and other than looking ominous, they really don't cause any harm, so, unless it really distresses you, just don't look, and drink up! You may want to try the soaking/rinsing like the PUR filters suggest, and see if that helps. or if it happens on your next filter, I might consider changing brands.

black specks in my brita water?

The filter is new and I never noticed this before until now. I read the instructions on how to use a new filter by soaking it in water for 15 minutes and I did that.
Now my water has black specks?! Do I need to soak it again or do I just need to dump it out and get a new water filter like a different brand?!
And what are those black specks? Is it bad if I drank the water that contained those black stuff.

my friend has the same problem with her brita filter. but hers also has black specks on the top where you pour the water in. looks like pepper.

The specks are actually little pieces of carbon. It's not dangerous at all. The inside of the filter is filled with those little black pieces of carbon. The carbon is actually what absorbs all of the chemicals from the water.

What are the tiny black specks in my tap water?

I have got a Brita water pitcher to filter these black specks and it just lets them run through. Can anyone tell me what these spects or flects are and if they are harmful. Should my Brita water pitcher be filtering them out ?

They are "carbon fines" from the Brita filter element.
Not harmful. Actually helplful.

Don't forget to wash the Brita occasionally. Remove filter element first. Then wash the rest with soap and water and rinse thoroughly. Reassemble before the filter element begins to dry out. Keep Brita in refrigerator, never at room temperature according to the Red Cross.

Is it safe to drink the black stuff (carbon?) in the water from the brita pitcher?

every time i pour it out and pour tap water through the filter i always find little specks of black things. is it safe to drink or should i return it?

it's perfectly safe. Sometimes they give the same activated charcoal to patients in hospitals to help with some ailments. Not to worry. Little tiny specs of it won't make a difference.

Tap Water Filtration Systems – Buyer#39;s Guide

Choosing from the many tap water filtration systems for your home can be a chore.    Here is a brief buyer’s guide to help you find the right tap water filter system.

Technology

Reverse osmosis and distillation are old out-dated purification technologies.  They have been replaced by devices that will sit on your kitchen countertop or larger units that fit under the kitchen sink.  There a re effective products that attach to your showerhead and without disrupting flow-rate, remove chlorine and other hazardous chemicals that you are exposed to in the shower.

The technology to look for includes granular carbon, adsorption, filtering media to target specific chemical contaminants, ion exchange to target lead and metallic traces, as well as a submicron particle filter.

Similar to reverse osmosis, a submicron particle filter removes parasitic cysts and tiny speck-sized particulates.  But, the step costs less and can be included in smaller devices.  It also prevents the creation of wastewater and prevents waters from cycling around other filtering media.
