Brita filters-black flecks in water?

Does anybody who uses the Brita Maxtra jug filters notice tiny black particles in the filtered water? I think they are coming from inside the filter, and there seems to be a lot also accumulated between the filter and the jug. I change my filter every 6 weeks and clean out the jug regularly.

Does anyone know what they are and why this is happening? Is it supposed to happen? Are they harmful at all do you think?

Thanks! :)

That's normal. I've been drinking Brita water for over 10 years and it's the charcoal from the filter. It doesn't harm you in any way. Most of the time it just stays in the area on top and doesn't float into the water. Just clean your pitcher every time you use it and you'll be fine.

Regenerate Expensive BRITA FILTER. Is it healthy? Use activated carbon?

You may be helping a lot of people to save money and keep healthy by answering and share your experience using Brita filters.

I found that Brita Filter replacement cartridges and similar products are extremely expensive. Not mention if you have to pay for the water+sewage as well in your monthly utility bill.

1. Is it good for pregnant woman to drink water filtered by brita instead of buying bottled/distilled water?
2. Is brita filter cartridge contains only activated carbon, what are the white/cream particles inside?
3. Is it easy to regenerate just by boiling it, or you have to reactivate the carbon by baking or burning it?
4. Can you replace the carbon with regular activated carbon (with the same particle size)?

It depends on what you are wanting to filter out of the tap water. Do you know if your tap water contains an elevated level of lead or other heavy metal or chemicals other than the chlorine added in water treatment? If not, I suspect that most filters are very effective far beyond their recommended capacity, since that is based on the worst possible level of contamination in any water system. If you want to test this, use the filter for a while beyond the recommended replacement date, and test the water for chlorine with a swimming pool test kit. If you don't have a pool or know someone with one, call local pool maintenance companies & see what they would charge to test it for you. I am quite certain that there is no way to regenerate activated charcoal/carbon.

The truth is that TAP WATER is just fine in most communities. State laws regulate frequent samplings, inspections and reports on the content of our drinking water.

Lugging in jugs of bottled water to drink in your house is simply not necessary.

Bacteria in Brita Filters?

I have hear that they have been banned in Europe because of bactria that builds up inside them over time. when i googled it nothing came up just wondering if anyone else knows anything about this?
I am looking for an actual answer and not just what someone thinks
thanks!

It has happened to me when I left the filter in far too long. The first sign is a slight "starring" phenomenon on the sides of the pitcher. The bacteria form a gooey, whitish slime in the filter. If that happens, discard the filter (DUH!), thoroughly wash the pitcher and all parts, and soak for 30 minutes in a solution of 3 tsp household bleach in 2 gallons of water. Then, re-wash, rinse, and install a new filter.

Trust me, it's YUCKY!

In case you didn’t know, Benjamin is Dustin Hoffman’s character in the movie The Graduate from 1967. Today Benjamin wouldn’t be so confused about the role of plastics in our lives and nowhere is it more prevalent than in the form of the plastic water bottle.

I’d like to think that Benjamin was a conscientious person and that maybe he would have landed a job with the Brita Water Filtration Systems Company. By now you’ve probably seen their clear plastic pitchers hanging out in your friend’s fridge, or maybe you own one like me. Brita’s plastic filters reduce your tap water’s chlorine taste and remove mercury via the carbon bits stuffed inside. But what do you do with the filter after it has served its purpose and needs replacing? To solve this question, Brita partnered with Boston-based Preserve , a 13-year-old company that makes house wares from recycled plastics. You may be wondering how this translates into Jubbling?

    Brita MYRF-100 Refrigerator Replacement Filter

    By Kirtlander (Kirtland, OH USA)
Except for the slightly-looser fit with the refrigerator fitting in my Maytag Wide-by-side, it installed easily and without leaks (I'm currently on my second filter). It works every bit as well as the original Maytag filter at 2/3 the price. I've used Brita pitcher filters in the past; the water quality seems as good as what I'd get from the pitcher filters.

great option to the more expensive maytag filter, however it doesnt fit as snug. I installed it and it leaked water all over the fridge, but it my fault it was cross threaded. once i fixed the problem it worked like a charm. Takes a long time to flush before first use. They seem to last longer though, 12 months insted of the 6 month maytag filters. I...
