Filter water when treating a betta for fin rot?

My poor betta devoloped fin rot late last night and i got him lifeguard ( my only choice in our local mart ) an all in one treatment that fights off a wide range of bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic extarnal fish diseases. i have him in a 1.5 gallon tank with the whisper internal filter which i removed the carbon filter from as it said to do. I only run the filter alittle bit each night normaly as to not make to much current in the tank and do the weekly 10% water changes. should i be keeping the filter on at all time with the treatment in the water? or keep up with what im currently doing?
the treatment unfortunaly didnt say wether the filter should be on or off. and i can sevral more water changes a week to help thank you for that info :) I had also read though that a large current was bad for bettas and mine doesnt have an adjusment knob. So i put a clamp in it so its not as strong but still kinda pushes him if hes at the top. So should i just leave the filter on at all times?

You should not be turning your filter off. If that is what the package said, it is wrong. You should be keeping the filter on, putting the treatment in the water, the filter will allow it to circulate throughout the tank. PS: That is not a good tank size for a Betta fish, if you want it to heal from fin rot. They should be in a 2.5 gallon tank at MINIMUM.

Would a under gravel water filter help the Green water?

My brother has a new 55 gallon corner tank. So it is tall and has a curved front big piece of glass. I know he did not give the nitrogen cycle enough time to build up before he added his fish. It was up for a day or two at 78 degrees with two above water filers, a 40 and a 20 on opposite walls.
He combined two tanks full of fish into this one, a 10 and a 20. about half of the guppies got wiped out by his angel fish within the first night.
Any how He got rid of his 10 gallon so now all he has is a 20 and his new 55 corner tank. He put his large angel back into his 20g because he wasnt looking to hot, had fun rot coming on from the new tank... He's doing great now. And so are the rest of the fish in the Green 55 gallon. but he cant get the water to stop being green.
So my question is, should he try and remove as many fish as possible over to his 20, while he lets his 55's nitrogen cycle establish? And will a under gravel water filter with a bunch of gravel on it help the situation in terms of water flow and filtration?
Right now there are about 15 little guppies, 1 cherry and tiger barb, and some kind of bottom feeding catfish(who looks fine). The tank is not next to a window, has nothing but ornaments on the bottom of it for now, a 75 gallon sponge filter, a couple bubble stones, and now the one 40 or 45 gallon above water filter. I was thinking a under gravel filter would really help with the flow and filtration a bit, all though i dont have any experiance with them, and niether do the people at the pet store. I know it goes under gravel, and connects to your air pump. and the carbon filter for it usually doesnt help with the water flow and is a insignificant source for carbon in the tank. Do i also need a power head thing? the ones you see at the petstores that blow bubbles?

The green is not related directly to the cycle, and undergravel filtering will do nothing to help. If the tank has good power filtering then dont bother with U/G.

The green water (free floating algae) will be related to light and nutrient levels in the tank. Is it getting too much natural light, or the tank lights being left on too long? As you have no live plants you dont actually need the tank lights at all, so cut back on the lighting as see if the water clears.

my filter turns the water black? did i do something wrong? 10 points best answer?

I just bought an aquarium kit yesterday and it came with a filter with no instructions....it is a clear box shaped filter with black rocks in there. I think the black rocks are the carbon. I think this is the filter i have:
http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10 ...

Anyways, i put the air pump in the tube and when i turned it on, the filter was popping out bubbles and black stuff. The black stuff is probably coming from the black carbon rocks but is this supposed to happen? I dont want a tank with black water. What do i do??? Please help because i want my filter running so i begin the nitrogen cycle
oohh so i just need to rinse them under water? Thanks! Good thing i dont have any fish yet :)

Did you rinse the carbon very thoroughly? You have to rinse carbon until the water runs clear, otherwise the black carbon dust will color your water black. Take it out and rinse it.

10 gallon water changes?

10 gallon water changes?
How often would you do water changes and gravel cleaning in a ten gallon tank with 4 platies and a small peacock eel?
I now do 20% changes weekly and change the carbon inthe filter about every three weeks. is this good? should i do more or should i do less?
I also have a small 5 gallon hex with one betta, oto catfish, and 2 ghost shrimp, i have been doing 20% changes weekly and the cartridge about every month for the last 3 or so months and they have been fine.

Thanks a lot!

You are fine with that

Activated Carbon Filter Media?

Hey guys.

I just bought one of those AquaClear activated carbon filter media from a local pet store, since I couldn't find the regular carbon cartridges my filter uses.

I followed the boxes instructions by rinsing it throughly in water, but these black particles keep coming out from inside the bag, and there seems to be no end to it. I've already rinsed the media out for over 10 minutes, but the activated carbon still turns the water all dark and murky; it's beastly stuff.

But can I still put this into my power filter? Or does there seem to be something wrong with the activated carbon I just bought?

sounds to me that the carbon in the bag,has been pulverized.the particals are so small they find the way out of the bag.ten minutes.is way too long to be rinsing this carbon.the dust generated from the shipping/handling should have been rinsed away in a minute or so.take it back to the pet store.by the way, its a good idea to rinse carbon in purified water,as the tap water contaminates saturate the carbon reducing its life and ability to soak up pollutants.it should be sealed away from the air as well.

Will Blog for Food: Much Drinking Water Contains Cancer Causing ...

Results from a federal drinking water monitoring program show that many public water companies are ineffective at removing a widely used weed-killer from their water supplies.

As the Huffington Post Investigative Fund reported earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency has failed to notify the public about data showing that the herbicide atrazine has been found at levels above the federal safety limit in drinking water in at least four states. Atrazine has been studied for its potential link to breast cancer, prostate cancer, and birth defects, and the EPA considers it to be a potential endocrine disruptor. It is banned in the European Union.

But the EPA’s data also reveals that many public water filtration systems are not removing the herbicide. In many places, atrazine levels in untreated water sources such as rivers directly match the levels that come out of the tap.

A carbon filter with granular activated carbon — in other words, a giant Brita-like filter — should absorb all or most of the atrazine. But the EPA’s atrazine monitoring data shows that many water utilities in the Corn Belt do not use carbon filtration. Many use rapid sand filters instead. They are cheaper and last longer, but are unable to remove organic compounds such as PCBs, phthalates, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides such as atrazine.

ich on my coral beauty angel - Reef Sanctuary

Unfortunately, I got ich on my coral beauty angel a few days ago and plan to do the Copper treatment in a 10-gallon QT tank for all fish when I come back from vacation after labor day weekend. Right now, all fish (1 2-inch coral beauty angel, 1 small six-line wrasse, 1 small wheeler watchman and 2 1-inch clowns) are eating well and I've been dipping food in garlic extreme or selcon to build up their immunity. The DT is a CAD 22. All parameters are good in the DT. 1. You can't beat a simple sponge filter. It draws wanter gently from the bottom and with the use of air, circulates water in the QT gently. When around sick fish, the sponge filter will pose no threat to the fish. It can be disposed of without any concern to the wallet, and it is easily seeded in the DT. I would save the HOB filter for another tank you may wish to setup in the future -- or sell it. 2. No. Water doesn't establish the biological filter. The number of bacteria in the water is amazingly low. Think about...
