Can the activated carbon used by home brewers (to distill alcohol) be used as a water filter?

I spend $35 to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I'm thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.

Can any chemists - amateur or professional - tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?

Not sure but if you want more information on filters look up the website for a company callled CUNO.

Can bulk activated carbon be used in water filters?

I own a Katadyn Combi water filter. Carbon refill packets for it are expensive. There are many places to buy activated carbon in bulk relatively cheap. Physically it's a trivial matter to buy in bulk and use it in the filter but I'm wondering about the quality of the carbon, the form of the carbon and how suited it is for the filter or anything else I need to be aware of when buying carbon in bulk.

I think you might be in for more trouble than its worth. Activated carbon will come in a powder form, most likely. So then you'd have to open the filters, dump out the old stuff, and hope your system has enough pressure to push through that much carbon.

I would look into some heavy research on the fabrication of carbon filters before I tried to do something like that.

Its sort of like saying "gas is expensive, i think i'll just buy oil on the open market, and refine it at home to make the gasoline."

Can Powdered Activated Carbon water filters remove oil contamination from water? does it kill bacteria?

Yes and no

activated carbon removes chlorine and chloramines (chemicals your water utility puts in water to slow bacteria growth) and activated carbon removes SOME organics. Some of the oils may be removed, but they may quickly saturate the activated carbon bed and pass through. Benzene and toluene are typical organics that are removed to some degree by AC beds.

As to bacteria, in fact activated carbon provides an excellent medium for bacteria to grow. AC is porous and since it is collecting organics, it provides water, food, and darkness. perfect for bacteria. And since you're removing agents that control bacterial growth in the first place, you should expect MUCH higher bacteria counts after an AC bed.

From my decade working with AC beds.

why we use activated carbon in a filter?

can anybody tell me why we put a pouch of activated carbon in a water filter ?
what are its advantages? any disadvantage ? when we have to remove its pouch . any defined time for its expiration ?

It isn't needed really. Your tank only needs a filter media. Most advanced aquarists only use carbon to remove meds after treatment of a tank and not much more. I really has no benefit for absorbing ammonia or nitrites. Your dechlor water conditioner De chlor will remove all the heavy metals (neutrilize them)
f
Other than neurtalizing meds there are no real advantages to carbon or not.

Carbon depending on what is in the tank is pretty much useless after only a few days in the tank before it starts to leach out what it has absorbed.

Salt water tanks do not use carbon at all. Even without a skimmer

Help with a homemade water filter.?

I need to dechlorinate some water flowing at about 5-20 gpm. To do this, I want to build an activated carbon water filter large enough that I don't have to replace the carbon too often. I have some ideas, but information about carbon filters is suprisingly scarce. Does anyone have any ideas about how to design such a filter?
I have been thinking of using a barrel for the housing.

Get a pool sand filter and fill it with Activated carbon instead or or in addition to sand (depends on the screen size and grain size of the carbon).

You didn't mention the chlorine concentration as this will have an impact on sizing and life expectancy of the media.

Sodium Thiosulfate is also used as a dechlorinating agent.

By pulling moisture out of the atmosphere, the DH9 is said to eliminate virtually all contaminants that might otherwise occur in groundwater.  The device then further purifies the water to eliminate 99.99% of contaminants.  There’s an electrostatic air filter to remove small airborne particles like pollen and dust, a germicidal uV light that destroys bacteria and other microorganisms, a coconut hull filter that eliminates heavy metals, chlorine residuals and mineral salts, and a reverse osmosis (RO) filter to remove any remaining pathogens or fine particles.  Unlike other RO filters, where the wastewater is then flushed (so that the user drinks one purified gallon for each six to ten that are wasted), the DH9’s revolutionary RO filter reprocesses it so that no water is lost.  A gravity-fed storage tank holds 6.5 gallons that would be accessible even in the event of...

    Carbon block improves NanoCeram filter

An improved design of the NanoCeram pleated filter announced on 1 September 2009 by Argonide Corporation, Florida, USA, adds a carbon block to more fully utilize its total chlorine adsorption capacity.

The NanoCeram-PACB high performance activated carbon filter incorporates the company's innovative powder activated carbon infused filter, which is pleated around a carbon block center core. This foul-resistant filter as the NanoCeram-PAC media helps to prevent foulants from reaching the carbon block surface.

Applications for these carbon-based filter cartridges include drinking water for residential and commercial use, and in process and wastewater applications for industry. These filters are capable of removing a wide range of soluble and insoluble contaminants, compared with most water filter systems, where the sediment and activated carbon stages are separate...
