I just got some used carbon cages but they are a bit scratched up. The original had a glossy outside look. When I run the cages through water, the cages look like new again, but when it dries the scratch look comes about again.
My question is is there something I can buy at my LBS or hardware store where I can regloss the cages and restore them? Thanks.
I would give clear coating it a go. You can get clear coat in spray cans almost anywhere. I'd use an automotive type like Duplicolor.

My three year dumped a whole jar of fish food into my fish tank along with old check books, a CD, a screw driver pen caps, credit cards and other paper work. I'm already two weeks into cycling this tank. Is there any way to get it all out with out starting a new cycle. The siphon hose is only getting a little out. Do I need to start all over because of the carbon copies in the old check books? How do I get the food off my filter cage? Help the water is getting nasty fast.
Remove the fish into some clean water. Then, remove everything. Gravel, water, plants, ornaments, the lot. Dispose of the gravel, and get some more. Rinse the plants and ornaments. Then, check your filter. See if it works after you have cleaned it.

I have a 90 gallon tank. Here is my current filter setup:
Emperor 400, converted to all bio filtration using 1.5 liters of matrix bio media, a fistfull of pillow stuffing as pre-filter, and 2 air stones under the matrix.
Magnum 350 Canster, with 2/3 matrix and 1/3 carbon in a media cage, wrapped up with pure-flo 50 micron cloth, a standard rite-size pad, and then surrounded with pillow stuffing.
2 large sponge filters (the glass tube / blue sponge kind) hooked up to an air pump.
My current setup is great for bio filtration, but I'm not getting enough particle matter out of the tank. I can see thousands of little particles floating around in the water.
I'd like to switch to the paper filter for the magnum, but I bet there will not be enough bio filtration.
I was considering buying a used magnum hot 250 with a paper filter in it.
Any suggestions for diatom / paper filters / solutions to reduce particle matter in the tank?
You can always do what I use to do when I had a 90 freshwater.
You already have a good bio filter with the Emperor 400, add a Aqua clear 70 or 110 loaded with a foam insert, and Bio balls people use in saltwater wet dry filters.
Keep your Magnum 350 all hooked up and ready to go BUT replace the "basket" with the micron (paper) filter and turn it on once per week for about 8 hours.
This will keep your Bio filter about the same or even better(with the aqua clear) and WILL get rid of all your suspended particles.

Hi Steve, All the carbon bottle cages do the same thing, they hold your water bottle and price doesn’t seem to make any difference to how well they work, they all hold the bottle tightly at first but as you use it they tend to get loser.
That said they look great, so which ones do we recommend, well here is our list:

When painted matte finishes first appeared on bikes in the mid-1990s, I found the look novel. Then I tired of it, the way we all tired of florescent colors. The lack of a clearcoat over the decals made bikes look rather third-rate, cheap.
I have a different opinion of matte finishes in carbon fiber. When I see a matte finish on a carbon fiber bike, I see a frame that the manufacturer has optimized for weight and performance. At some point, someone will probably produce something of questionable quality that will make a lie of my assumption, but currently, the frames I see in matte finishes tend to be plenty stiff while weighing less than a kilogram (2.2 pounds).
Paint, as it turns out can mean the difference between breaking the 1kg barrier and not. Even on small frames paint weighs at least 2 ounces (56 grams), often more. Think about it: Paint can add 3 oz. to a 56cm frame with no increase in stiffness whatsoever.
