This reference has a good summary. A standard softner will not. There are advanced systems. RO is the best method along with distillation. If you are hooked up to a public system, they do it for you.

check it out. the under the sink called the reverse osmosis filters cost $499 include install and tax comes with the carbon filter which you have to unscrew and put in new filter every six months. and the other one costs $599 with install and tax. with this one , you throw away the whole filter unlike the carbon filter one. which one is better. also there the whole house filter which comes with water softener and the under the sink filter for $2000 with tax and install. any suggestions or opinions are appreciated. thanks.
why not just get a water filter that attaches to your faucet>? they are like 25=30 bucks at walmart or target. the one I bought today was $30 and it will filter 300 gallons of water before I have to replace it.

We have a Kinetico water softener system (Mach 2060s) that uses a 20 inch by 2-1/2 inch filter, but I was wondering if somebody sells a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter that would work in this system, so we can filter out radon. I can't find anything and would appreciate it if anyone had some insight into this... Thank you!
Since radon is a gas you really don't need to do anything to your softener system. I'm sure it filters and cleans your water of solid contaminents.
There are several radon detector kits available that will test the air in your house for any trace of radon. Check your local hardware store or places like Menards or Home Depot.
Your local city offices might also know if there is any info for tour area on radon.

...Iron amp; Manganese Removal
.”). The fact of the matter is that iron CAN be removed using an ion-exchange salt-regenerated water softener, but usually a water softener doesn’t do it very long or very effectively. The best water softeners for removing iron are those that have twin softening tanks (one is always in service), which regenerate with soft water and fill the brine tank with soft water. If you have a water softener which removes ALL the iron, consider yourself as lucky as winning the lottery. Softeners work well to do just what they are supposed to do – soften the water by removing the calcium and magnesium, but iron (rust) is another animal and to remove it effectively, it usually has to be oxidized. Neither iron nor manganese in water present a health hazard. However, their presence in water may cause taste, staining, and accumulation problems. How to oxidize iron is the subject of this blog post.
