when drinking water is contaminated by hazardous substances, how is it released in land or into rivers and lakes?
please help! I need this for my homework, and I'm so confused!
It usually comes from human activity - mining, landfill sites, fertilizers, pesticides, bleach and other detergents, medical waste.

besides diarrhea, hepatitis, and cholera, what are other diseases brought about by drinking contaminated water?
Besides what has been written already there's about five serious side diseases that include parasites that can contaminate your body.
The water in my town and county is contaminated.there was a lot of cases of a bug called cryptosporidium which lead to the water being suspected of being contaminated.i have not gotten the bug but i have been unwell for a few months now.i have been going to the doc complaining of lack of energy mainly.i drink about 2-3 litres of water a day.since my energy has been down i have also being getting a lot of viruses and infections.i am currently trying to get rid of a throat infection.i didnt really think the water would of caused this at first but i have started to think how drinking 2-3 litres of contaminated could affect me.i am sure it hasnt helped.its been going on for months apparently.i had noticed a strange taste in the water which i now know was chlorine but they were trying to keep it from getting out that it was contamined but it eventually got out and now theres uproar.can anyone let me know could it of been the cause for my symptons.thank you
I am well aware of what cryptosporidium is.i dont need to know anymore about that or how to deal with it.what i am asking is can drinking water contaminated with it cause other problems.i have no diarrhoea, stomach cramps, upset stomach, etc.i have been feeling very run down and having lots of infections.am trying to sort it out with my doctor the past few months.what i want to know is could the water be causing any of this???
Im not saying its causing my throat infection.i have been getting a lot infections.i was wondering if it could be causing anything to make me have these infections.does it affect the immune system
I'm really sorry you seem to be having so much trouble getting your questions answered.
If your drinking water is contaminated but with an organism other than crytospiridium, I'd have to know the specific organism to discuss possible effects. If your water IS contamintated with crypto, you'd start showing symptoms about 2-10 days after the inital infection. The symptoms usually last 1-2 weeks and they come and go - dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting or you could have no symptoms at all. The parasite can affect the respiratory system, too.
I don't believe that the viruses and infections you've been experiencing have anything to do with crypto. There may some other underlying cause for this. A blood test might reveal a causative agent.
In order to diagnose cryptosporidiosis (the infection), your doctor would order an O&P (ova and parasite). It's a test that requires a stool sample. You may need to give several samples to get an accurate diagnosis. In the meantime, I suggest you switch to bottled water from the market or home delivery (Sparklett's). If you suspect water contamination, don't keep introducing this water into your system.
There's no specific treatment and it's recommended that one infected drink plenty of water and treat any diarrhea with anti-diarrheals. Basically healthy people will recover with no problems. And YES there IS a medication for it! There is a new treatment, nitazoxanide, that's been approved for treatment of cyrptosporidiosis in people with a healthy immune system. Keep that in mind.

EPA admits water contaminated at gas-drilling fields « Fire Earth
Now for the first time ever, EPA scientists have revealed that drinking water wells near natural gas [and oil] drilling operations contain chemical contaminants. They found dangerous chemicals in the water from 11 of 39 wells tested near the Wyoming town of Pavillion in March and May 2009. Unfortunately, their report falls shy of concluding what causes the contamination, though it admits the gas drilling is a potential source.
Researchers say these chemicals may cause cancer, kidney failure, anemia and low fertility problems, and pose serious health risks to people who live close to the drilling sites, Reuters reported .

As of March 2009, EPA has designated 77 Sole Source Aquifers nationwide. Five of these are in Region 8 (which includes Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming). EPA defines a Sole Source Aquifer as one which supplies at least 50 percent of the drinking water consumed in the area overlying the aquifer. EPA guidelines also stipulate that these areas can have no alternative drinking water source(s) which could physically, legally, and economically supply all those who depend upon the aquifer for drinking water. Sole source aquifer designation provides only limited federal protection of ground water resources which serve as drinking water supplies. It is not a comprehensive ground water protection program. Protection of ground water resources can best be achieved through an integrated and coordinated combination of federal, state, and local efforts. (Source: EPA website .)
...You May Be Unknowingly Drinking Water Contaminated With Weed ...
One of the nation's most widely-used herbicides has been found to exceed federal safety limits in drinking water in four states, but water customers have not been told and the Environmental Protection Agency has not published the results. ~ Video
Records that tracked the amount of the weed-killer atrazine in about 150 watersheds from 2003 through 2008 were obtained by the Huffington Post Investigative Fund under the Freedom of Information Act. An analysis found that yearly average levels of atrazine in drinking water violated the federal standard at least ten times in communities in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kansas, all states where farmers rely heavily on the herbicide.
In addition, more than 40 water systems in those states showed spikes in atrazine levels that normally would have triggered automatic notification of customers. In none of those cases were residents alerted.
In interviews, EPA officials did not dispute the data but said they do not consider atrazine a health hazard and said they did not believe the agency or state authorities had failed to properly inform the public. "We have concluded that atrazine does not cause adverse effects to humans or the environment," said Steve Bradbury, deputy office director of the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs.
