What problems can drinking hard water cause?
Construction Workers on a roof

I use a water filter but it doesn't filter away the minerals found in hard water. It only cleans the water of any germs and bacteria. What can I do to remove the minerals from the hard water (other than boiling the water)? Drinking coke instead is not an option!

Thanks.

Drinking hard water wont do anything to you thats of great concern perhaps increasing mineral deposits from the inside.

The real harm hard water will cause is with your fixtures in your home. Faucets, shower heads, water heaters and so on.

The only solution is to remove the calcium and magnisium in your water. This makes up hard water. A water softener will cure all your needs :)

Will drinking hard water hurt me?
DESCRIPTION

We have hard water (well water) and we don't have the money to get a water softener, or a UV light to kill the germs. We also can't afford to just go and buy water bottles. Will drinking the water on a daily basis hurt me and my family?

From reading about hard water from chemistry textbook a while ago, there is no sufficient evidence that hard water is harmful to humans in anyway. I personally think it is not a problem. You can also boil the water I suppose or buy a water kettle of some sort.

Can drinking hard water be bad for your health?

I was wondering if it might cause deposits on the kidneys. Thank you.

The World Health Organization says, "There does not appear to be any convincing evidence that water hardness causes adverse health effects in humans."[6]

Some studies have shown a weak inverse relationship between water hardness and cardiovascular disease in men, up to a level of 170 mg calcium carbonate per litre of water. The World Health Organization has reviewed the evidence and concluded the data were inadequate to allow for a recommendation for a level of hardness.[6]

In a review by František Kožíšek, M.D., Ph.D. National Institute of Public Health, Czech Republic there is a good overview of the topic, and unlike the WHO, sets some recommendations for the maximum and minimum levels of calcium (40-80 mg/L) and magnesium (20-30 mg/L) in drinking water, and a total hardness expressed as the sum of the calcium and magnesium concentrations of 2-4 mmol/L.[7]

Other studies have shown weak correlations between cardiovascular health and water hardness.[8][9][10]

Very soft water can corrode the metal pipes in which it is carried and as a result the water may contain elevated levels of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc [6].

What#39;s in our drinking water, and what can we do about it ...

I receive a lot of inquiries about source water. People get concerned about contaminants in their water, because they hear about problems in the news, or read about water issues on the internet. Some of the fears that I hear are unfounded, while others are open to debate. This article is about the contaminants found in water, and which filters can effectively deal with them, regardless of which side of the argument that you choose to support.

I’m a big fan of water ionizers, but let’s begin this discussion by declaring that water ionizers don’t remove chemicals from the water. Let me repeat that, they don’t remove chemicals from the water. The filters for water ionizers do a good job of removing chlorine from the water with the carbon component of the filter, but that is about it. They don’t remove fluoride, nitrates, chloramines, lead, mercury, heavy metals, or any other contaminants such as drugs that find their way into our water supply.
