Because most mammals, with the exception of some marine mammals, do not need to, as most available water is "fresh" water, i.e. not salty.

Although some marine mammals are known to drink seawater at least on occasion, it is not well established that they routinely do so. They have other options: sea-dwelling mammals can get water through their food, and they can produce it internally from the metabolic breakdown of food (water is one of the by-products of carbohydrate and fat metabolism)

The salt content of the blood and other body fluids of marine mammals is not very different from that of terrestrial mammals or any other vertebrates: it is about one third as salty as seawater. Because a vertebrate that drinks seawater is imbibing something three times saltier than its blood, it must get rid of the excess salt by producing very salty urine. In the seal and sea lion species, for which measurements exist, the animals' urine contains up to two and a half times more salt than seawater does and seven or eight times more salt than their blood

I would like to know is there any cheaper method to produce drinking water from sea water. How does it cost to build a biger scale? How can I find the methodology and monthly capacity of this method? Is there easy to maintainance or not? Do this system need to use the chemical to process drinking water? How many country has already used this method? This system can provide for how many persons' daily drinking water?

Add to that a growing population and you’ve got a crisis on your hands–and one not limited to California. According to the International Water Management Institute, about 33% of the world’s population will be facing water scarcity by 2025. One solution has been wastewater recycling plants like the one up and running now in Orange County. That facility recycles about 70 million gallons of water a day. Another is desalination–taking seawater, which accounts for nearly 98 percent of the water on earth, and removing the salt, making the water potable.

Early next year, construction will begin on a desalination plant in Carlsbad, California. According to environmental think tank Pacific Institute in Oakland, California, over the last five years an average of 800 new desalination plants have been constructed each year. The global market for desalination could reach a whopping $58 billion a year. According to the industry research group Global Water Intelligence, the world’s desalination capacity grew 43 percent in 2006 and 2007. About 14,400 plants operate worldwide, according to the research group. The U.S. has been slow to adopt the technology–Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, United Arab Emirates, Spain, northern Africa, Australia and other regions have used desalinated water for years.

A man is lost at sea. This scenario rarely ends in a casualty due to starvation or shark attack, but the lack of drinking water. It is a sad irony to die of thirst when so much water surrounds you.

With today’s desalination technology, however, the next bottle of water you guzzle down may very well have originated in the ocean. Water purification research with the use of membranes and reverse osmosis has been underway since the 60’s. Contaminated water is forced through this semi-permeable membrane which allows water to pass through but all contaminants such as salt and bacteria are left behind.

Water purification plants use this technology worldwide, but the high cost of desalination has kept it from being used as much as it could be. It can cost upwards of $1,000 to desalinate an acre-foot of seawater. This is roughly the amount of water 1-3 suburban families use per year. Compared to the $200 per acre foot it costs to filter water from other sources, desalinization does seem costly.
