Identify five potential sources of contamination for our drinking water?
SAVE DRINKING WATER (THINKING OF JAPAN)

Identify five potential sources of contamination for our drinking water supplies. Please also discuss the possible effects of bioterrorism on drinking water.

1) industrial pollution discharged directly or indirectly (i.e. land application) into the water supply.
2) agricultural run-off (nitrates, pesticides, herbicides
3) natural sources of contaminants (i.e. lead, arsenic) in the area water is stored.
4) contaminants contained in the constructionn of water delivery systems. For example, at one time lead was commonly contained in the solder for water pipes.
5) broken water delivery pipes
6) Contaminants...i.e jet fuel ... precipitating down from the air into above ground storage or percolating into ground water
7) Direct human contamination by use of water reservoirs for recreation

Humm...bioterrorism..unlikely to be detected until many people are harmed. Extremely difficult if not impossible to clean up. Inability to use the water supply...and water is very difficult and expensive in he short term to transport from elsewhere. Probably most "scary"...this may be the easiest large scale terror attack to pull off.

I never got one!

how can stop the wastage or contamination of drinking water which is Essential for life?
no para beber (it's no fun to be in charge of the infrastructure)

There are different ways to stop the contamination of water. We know that the water in rivers and lakes is already polluted and this can be reduced day by day by cleaning them and also not throwing wastage into them such as plastic. Also industries which realease harmful chemicals must be stopped. We should put pressure on the government so that they can take actions on cleaning up the river water It is very important to bring awareness in the public as also play a prominent role in that.We must remember that 65% of water in hyderabad got polluted We should feel responsible for ourselves then only we can able to to that.

  • Hormone-Disrupting Herbicide Widespread in U.S. Drinking Water ...

CHICAGO, Illinois, August 25, 2009 (ENS) - The common herbicide atrazine, known to impact wildlife reproductive health, has contaminated watersheds and drinking water throughout much of the United States, finds a new report released Monday by the Natural Resources Defense Council that raises concern about the chemical's effects on human reproduction.

The environmental nonprofit organization alleges that the U.S. EPA is ignoring its own data showing broad contamination of U.S. waters by atrazine, a known endocrine disruptor that affects human and animal hormones.

"The extent of contamination we found in the data was breathtaking and alarming," said Andrew Wetzler, director of NRDC's Wildlife Conservation Program and deputy director of NRDC's Midwest Program, as well as one of the report's authors. "The EPA found atrazine almost everywhere they looked."

The contamination data in the report was obtained as the result of a legal settlement and Freedom of Information Act requests, the NRDC said.

Proposed South Texas Project Reactors Pose Increased Water Use and ...

San Antonio, TX –  Nuclear power is the most water intensive energy source available. When San Antonio and all of Texas are suffering from extreme drought and are increasingly in need of sources of drinking water, pursuing more nuclear reactors doesn’t make sense, especially true since cheaper, safer alternatives such as energy efficiency, wind, geothermal and solar energy are available. All use significantly less water than nuclear reactors.

Dr. Lauren Ross’ comments are timely in that the Texas drought continues to worsen, and the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board is still considering nine water-related contentions submitted in opposition to additional reactors by SEED Coalition, Public Citizen and STARE, the South Texas Association for Responsible Energy.

“Nuclear reactors consume vast quantities of water,” said Dr. Lauren Ross, environmental engineer and owner of Glenrose Engineering. “The proposed STP reactors 3 and 4 would withdraw 23,170 gallons per minute from the Colorado River. The two proposed reactors would increase forced evaporation by an additional 37,400 acre-feet per year. The water withdrawal required from the Colorado River to replace evaporated water for all four reactors would be about 74,500 acre-feet per year.”
