what are the standards of microbiological safety of drinking water in Europe?
Quenching (small)

and also for recreational water (i.e. boating lakes, rivers etc.)

The link below has the EU (European Union) drinking water standards from 1998. Escherichia coli should be 0 in 250 ml; total colony count at 22 degree C less than 100 per ml.

This is more strict than the WHO standards that do not specify how many bacteria can be present.

For "bathing water" (recreational), there are no true standards, but water can be given a rating. It would be impossible to test all lakes, rivers, and other places where people could dive in! Instead, a country will usually test the water quality once a year, and rate it. E.g. To be qualified as "excellent" there should be less than 200 enterococci per 100 ml. The second link gives these specifics but there are different methods and different ratings, and I found it to be quite confusing. Maybe you can figure it out...

Good luck.

can the company I work for charge me for drinking water saying it is for m/c chilling costs and cups in uk?
Close up of water

I always thought it was illegal to charge for drinking water in the uk. Surely there are laws that prohibit this under health and safety. There are no alternative drinking water supplies apart from vending machine and an initial charge of of 0.02p per cup has been set. This will most likely increase to 0.05p once established and probably rise further

Why are we drinking so much bottled water?
Construction Workers on a roof

From a doctor at Johns Hopkins...

To date, no independent investigation has shown that bottled water passes more safety and health checks than tap water. In fact, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) tested 103 brands of bottled water and concluded there was no assurance that water out of a bottle is cleaner or safer than water from the tap. Another of their conclusions didn't surprise me either: They estimated that 25 percent or more of bottled water is nothing more than tap water.

Given the lack of objective research or evidence to favor bottled water over tap water, the decision on which to drink comes down to an individual choice. However, two things we know for certain: bottled water is more convenient and more expensive than tap water.

The NRDC reported that a five-year supply of bottled water cost over $1,000 compared with $1.65 for the same amount of tap water. Not to mention the environmental impact of the many discarded plastic water bottles.

That's a great question and one I've often asked myself. I can think of three reasons for it. In some areas, the water does taste like fluoride, or chlorine. For some people, I think they think it is "cool" to be drinking out of a water bottle. For many people, they are just scared of what is in there water and think the bottle water is better. I've known for years that bottled water has little or no regulations for testing. I think the environmental impact on plastic will change things in the near future as people become more aware of how they are contributing to our environment in a negative way. Everything comes down to the almighty dollar though, doesn't it.

31 Aug 09 Good News for Drinking Water Safety

It seems there's only bad news these days about our nation's drinking water safety. Health scares and contamination stories abound and it makes you wonder what on earth is coming out of our drinking water faucets.

Drinking water safety is a major health issue now, especially as we are being recommended to drink eight glasses a day! Studies have found over 2000 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer coming out of our drinking water faucets.

Our water companies just can't afford to make all of the water clean as only a tiny fraction is used for drinking. Instead they just use gallons of chlorine to make do as it's the cheapest, not the most effective, way.

We live in highly industrialized times, spewing out gases and chemicals into the environment which eventually find their way into the water table and into our homes. In part we are responsible as we demand more and more products to use, not realizing the by- product of this is pollution.

A crisis of contradictions - GloucesterTimes.com, Gloucester, MA

For 12 days now, residents have been confronted with two seemingly contradictory descriptions of the water coming out of their taps: The water is safe; you need to boil the water because something is wrong with it.

Such is the nature of drinking water safety and coliform bacteria. Traces of harmless, naturally occurring microbes can force the shutdown of an entire system out of concern it could be a sign of something dangerous.

As the city and state continue to search for the ultimate cause of the bacteria problems that led to state to issue a boil-water order Aug. 21, residents are reacting with understanding, irritation and confusion.

"The problem is, it seems like the city doesn't know what the problem is," School Street resident Randall Blackie said on Main Street yesterday. "The fact that it is still an issue after 11 days isn't good."

Evidence of public ambivalence can be found in the different ways residents are observing the order, which calls for residents to boil all city water for at least a minute before it's used for drinking, dish washing, teeth brushing and beverage cooling.
