My mother has an old house that has a lead service pipe coming from the external valve carrying drinking water
R.O.Tack water technology reverse osmosis plant pakistan on Vimeo by rotack

Is this safe?

Assuming you are in the UK, the water company's responsibility ends at the external stopcock. From there into the house is your mother's problem, I'm afraid. So, if she wants the pipe renewed with a modern alkathene one, she will have to pay for the work herself.

Lead isn't good for you, but (as long as you don't habitually lick it, eat it, breathe in lead dust or work with molten lead) its dangers can be exaggerated by the Health and Safety industry. If your mum is worried, I suggest that she runs the water for a while before filling the kettle in the morning, so as to replace the water which has been in contact with the lead pipe overnight.

When ingested, lead is a poison which slowly builds up in the body, and in extreme cases it begins to cause brain damage and in very extreme cases could eventually be lethal. Being realistic, is your mum showing signs of going a bit ga-ga? If not, then unless she is young, I don't think you or she need worry.

I have had a length of lead pipe in my incoming supply for 35 years, and recent tests show my IQ to be above normal. Still, without the lead, perhaps I would have been a genius.....

Reverse Osmosis,Plant ,Water Treatment, System, for boiler water by.rotack water on Vimeo by rotack

I'm shopping around for a new home delivery bottled water service.

Who has the best service?

Arrowhead
Sparkletts
Alhambra
Poland Spring
Zephyr Hills

If there are any others I didn't mention, please tell me what they are and if they are good?

I'm also wanting your help to tell me if the water is safe to drink, is the company enviro-friendly, etc.

Just drink Tap water. It is far more regulated than bottled water, and it is much cheaper even if you buy a filtering system. Municipal water systems are more efficient and environmentally responsible than having the exact same product trucked in. Most of the water services you mention get their water from municipal sources.

Is it true that, in England, hotels and restaurants must give free drinking water to anyone who requests it?
100922_26

I am under the impression that an old law requires "inns and taverns" to furnish drinking water free of charge to travellers who request it, and that in recent years it has been determined that this service is still required to be provided by hotels, pubs restaurants etc. Those establishments that display signs such as "tapwater is not served here" would therefore be in contravention of this law. Can any lawyer advise me as to whether I am right or wrong?

not to be a smart alleck, but there may or may NOT be lawyers on yahoo answers. You could probably find that out by just googling your question.

What is the law on restaurants supplying 'free' drinking (read tap) water in Holland?
100922_22

Living in Holland now and keep encountering fierce resistance when asking for a free glass of drinking water when in Restaurants, Clubs and on Dutch (Transavia) airlines. They all say they don't offer this service (I know in the UK any place that sells alcohol has to) and want to find out the specific laws about this here in the Netherlands.

While the Dutch are not famous for their customer services surely as nation of beer drinkers they must have some law regarding the free supply of drinking water.

Not sure about the laws but I know some places get stingy and only offer "mineral" water in bottles. I'm not exactly sure why... I mean it's not like it's hard to fill a glass with some water out of the tap. I just chalk it up to yet another quirky dutch thing. Which is why I've gotten into the habit of just bringing my own bottle of water where ever I go. It may be tacky but you'll never see me going thirsty.

How can we tell if our drinking water is really unsafe?
100922_25

is conroe texas water contaminated as of 04272006?
Our water on the north side of town is brown and nasty looking.
Water Dept refuses to offer any info and today my daughter's school, a block
away was telling kids the water is contaminated, they've brought in
water machines.Yet the chumps @ the water plant won't say a word, the calls all go to an answering service which isn't allowed to comment.

Get together as many people as you can to call your town's clerk office and complain or city mayor, call your local board of health and report it. The more calls the likely an investigation will take place. Get ideas from other people, call a meeting at the school from concerned parents.
In the meantime boil all the water you use for drinking and cooking before you use it.
There are water purifiers now too right in the grocery stores you can but,Britta, not sure of the spelling. Or bottled water that can be delivered to your home.
Try going on line too for information. You can also buy water testing kits.
Does the water have an ordor to it? You shouldn't taste anything if it is good.

  • Buy Cheap

  • Thames Water on the tap-v-bottled debate | MayorWatch

Before we get stuck into this issue, let’s be clear: the last thing we want to do is be in conflict with the bottled water sector.

We’ve always said that the goal of our London On Tap – www.londonontap.co.uk – campaign is simply to promote the quality of Thames Water’s tap water and remind Londoners that they have a choice – bottled OR tap – when they’re out for a meal or a drink.

And in these gloomy economic times, it’s worth remembering that a 250ml glass of tap water costs less than a fortieth of a penny – a good deal cheaper than bottled options. So much so, in fact, that it won’t even show up when the waiter brings you your bill.

But cheap, in this instance, absolutely does not mean scrimping on quality.

Just ask the Drinking Water Inspectorate, the water industry’s water quality watchdog, which has rated our tap water the best of all the major water and sewerage companies in England and Wales for the past two years.

Texas Heat Offers No Relief on Electric Bills | Senator Eliot ...

Record-breaking heat in parts of Texas is causing electricity bills to soar, just when most consumers were expecting some relief from sinking natural-gas prices.

The protracted heat wave -- Austin on Monday recorded its 64th day of 100-plus degree weather since June 1 -- has pushed electricity demand up to record levels, as air conditioners run overtime.

To meet the demand, costlier electric generators have been pressed into service. As a result, electric rates and consumer bills have risen despite the lower price of natural gas, which is used to generate most of the electricity in Texas.

Ray Basham, a press operator who lives in west San Antonio, saw his bill jump from $170 in June to $245 in July. That is partly because his utility, CPS Energy, raised its price per kilowatt hour to 10.4 cents in July, from 9 cents in June, when two power plants broke down and the utility had to go into the open market to purchase replacement power. "Luckily, my wife and I have jobs, so we could pay," he said.
