Is pollution the biggest threat to our drinking water supply?
weir hill

In the future, will pollution be the greatest threat to our drinking water supply?

Nah - for the most we can use technology to clean water to potability standards. I think the greatest threat is simply supply and demand - will we have enough fresh water to go around?

What will be the biggest problem of our drinking water supply in the U.S.?
Pompton Lakes Dam, Ramapo River, Passaic County, New Jersey

In the future, what problems do you think America will face regarding our drinking water? Whats the biggest?

Most drinking water in the US comes from wells.
Due to the increase in water demand, because of a growing population and growing cleanliness standards, the water table in which the wells tap, is getting lower all the time, and this is possibly the biggest problem, i.e. to reach it with ever deeper wells.
Another big problem is the pollution of the water table, due to seepage of polluting substances from the ground level downwards.
Finally, draining the water table may cause subsistence problems.

People in the US should start considering reducing their number of showers, use bottled mineral water from springs for drinking, use more efficient washing machines and dishwaters, or cultivate a culture where dirty is beautiful.

Do places that serve food have to supply drinking water free of charge (in the UK)?
Pompton Lakes Dam, Ramapo River, Passaic County, New Jersey

I was told this a long time ago, but have found recently several places where the only water available to accompany a meal was bottled water that had to be payed for. Has the law changed? or are these people breaking it?

One eatery that refused me tap water, Harry Ramsden's, told me the reason they could not give me any was because their water supply was not fit to drink! Is it legal for an eatery to operate without a supply of potable water?

All restaurants by law have to provide tap water free of charge, although they can charge you for ice, service of and use of glass and jug.

If they refuse then they have broken the law, if they tell you there tap water is not fit to drink then simply reply I'm sure environmental health would be very interested in that as you are now breaking two laws. This would be the case because UK tap water is treated to a higher quality than bottled and there would have to be a serious issue with the sites plumbing to make it undrinkable.

How can I supply drinking water for the winter wild birds without it freezing?

If there is no water available to them, do they eat snow?

Float a ball in the water and in the morning, just break it out of the ice. This will leave a small hole out of which they can drink out of. You can also boil the kettle in the morning and pour it over the ice.

  • Water Replenishment District details plans to preserve local water ...

    Staff Writer

California has experienced three years of consecutive drought, which has significantly reduced the state’s supply of water. While Southern California’s need to import water from the north and from the Colorado River has increased, the availability of imported water has decreased and become more expensive. To meet these challenges, the Water Replenishment District (WRD) is in the process of implementing a strategy designed to increase the amount of water contained in the area’s groundwater basins. On August 27, WRD held it first-ever “State of the District Breakfast” to explain the current condition of Southern California’s water supply and to outline some of the actions WRD will be taking in the next few years. About 80 people attended the event at WRD headquarters, 4040 Paramount Blvd., in Lakewood. Audience members included officials from several of the 43 cities served by WRD, as well as members of the agency’s board of directors and administrative...

Greater Wellington Regional Council stopped taking water supplies from the weir immediately prior to a possum control operation using 1080 poison that started on 7 August.

Maintaining high quality forests with low possum numbers provides a primary barrier against dirty and contaminated source water, thus minimising the treatment required to ensure safe drinking water.

There is still a risk to dogs scavenging carcasses from possums killed by 1080. This means that the treated areas of the Hutt water collection area, Kaitoke Regional Park on the western side of the Hutt River and Akatarawa Saddle Block will remain closed to dogs for some further months until carcasses have decomposed. Warning signs advising this will remain in place at all entrances to the catchment area until this time.

People exercising their dogs along the banks of the Hutt River are urged to keep them on a leash and under close supervision. Carcasses from possums killed by 1080 may have been washed down the Hutt River following recent heavy rains. Greater Wellington officers have been doing regular river bank and coastal inspections but cannot guarantee to find all possum carcasses, particularly amongst willow rows. Numerous possum carcasses that have not been poisoned have been found.
