so im doing a science project on "how clean is your water". do you know of any home tests you can do to test your drinking water? or do you know or any store chains(i dont really want to order one online) that sell drinking water test kits?

I want to know which country has the best drinking water. My hypothesis is that the water will rank U.S first, Canada second and Mexico third.I have collected tubes of water from all three countries but I need to know what I am looking for. What makes tap water from Mexico unsafe to drink? Do I test with a microscope or swimming pool water test kit? Any suggestions?
From the way you are asking the question, I am guessing this is some kind of grade school level experiment you are conducting. You can test for pH, hardness, conductivity, nitrite level. All these water test kits are available from your local pet store. There are also test kits for detecting bacteria level in water you can purchase online.
How would a poor biology student go about testing bacteria (eColi, coliform) in sea water? I've Googled testing kits, but all of them are for testing drinking water and are quite costly. Any ideas? Detailed, educated answers please!!
