What's the difference between buying distilled water and filtered drinking water?
Balance #2

Just found out we have very high acidity in our water. So I'm now getting bottled water. I'm worried more about my cat than myself (i drink the majority of my water while at work).

Is there one that is better than the other? Why?

There are 3 different types of cleaned water.

The first is basic filtered water. It is what the Pur and Britta systems do. It just basically removes some harsher minerals that affect taste and odor. They really don't do a thing for any health concern that may be in the water. As far as bottled water goes normally the only water that may be just filtered is natural spring water.

The next is purified water. Purified water has many impurities removed. These include many health concerns that may or may not be in your water. There are many degrees to purification but it is between basic filter and distilled. Most bottled waters are purified.

Finally distilled removes the most. Normally it must be distilled twice to actually remove everything. Water is boiled and the steam, which is pure water, is collected and condensed back into water. Yes distilled water is needed for batteries and should be used for irons and what not but it can still be consumed by people.

You may not need to get bottled water though. A good home purification system will remove enough that your water should go to a normal PH level. After all it is the contaminates in the water that change a water's PH in the first place. Getting one will be much cheaper than buying bottled water and more convient as well as better for the environment. The top of the line system I recommend is even cheaper per gallon by year 2 than the cheap Britta and Pur systems are.

What's the best type of filtered drinking water?
Cat Water

Thinking of getting a free-standing water cooler for my home. What do you suggest?

Well don't forget to compare longterm pricing too. The free standing coolers and service are great but usually a home purification system is cheaper.

If you do want a water service with standing cooler I would recoomend Deer Park. They have a really good water purification process.

If you want a home purifier keep in mind that the cheaper systems like Pur and Britta are basic filters and not purifiers. Plus they can still be more than a high quality purification system.

The highest rated sytem on the market now is one called eSpring. Only a home distillery can get water cleaner but they are more expensive to buy, to maintain and can be on the messy side. It is rated for standards 52, 53, and 55B from the NSF, has attained a Gold Seal from the Water Quality Association, and is top rated with consumer organizations. Extreme Edition Home Maker Over even used it.

It is not available in stores so you will have to ask for information to get it. I have used mine and got my own standing cooler and bottles and fill the bottles with my system. It makes extra room in the fridge and I can have cold or hot purified water. This is great as you cannot run hot water through any filter or purification system as it breaks down the activated carbon that is used to clean the water.

Would that make them live a little longer than usual? It's also got a filter in the tank already.

i have Britta set-up on my tap water...and i been use this kind the water in 20 years of fishes hobby.. thay lives longer or not...for only 20 years on this hobby's..i don't think i am good eought to make this call..but i can say..i never have problems with it..and my fishes are healthy.. the past 15 years i did even have Angelfishes and Discus. just because this 2 types of fishes requires better water quality.. i always have a 60 gals water sitting around. for 1/5 water changes weekly on all the tanks.

Re drinking water - is filtered rain water safe to drink?
Cat Water

We have had unprecedented amounts of rain here in Gloucester, England resulting in the worst flooding in living memory. Now the news is reporting that our water supply has been contaminated and they will need to shut down the purification plant later today. Therefore everyone here is panic buying water and being restricted as to how much they can buy. We have two huge holding tanks of rain water and I wondered if anyone knows whether these would be safe to drink if I first boiled the water, then passed it through a brita filter. I know this seems an excessive response but people here are just making the situation worse by filling up baths, sinks and every available pot, jug and jar and thus making the situation much worse as we will run out of water quicker as a result. I'm quite happy to wash in the water from our tanks once it has been boiled but I do drink a lot of water and just wonder if it's going to be safe!

i would think if you boiled it and filtered it it would remove all the pollutants that it had pickjed up along the way. Good thinking!

I am going to do a one day water fast today. How much water should i be drinking? And is Filtered water ok?
gethin_lane

Hormone-Disrupting Herbicide Widespread in U.S. Drinking Water

CHICAGO, Illinois , August 25, 2009 (ENS) The common herbicide atrazine, known to impact wildlife reproductive health, has contaminated watersheds and drinking water throughout much of the United States, finds a new report released Monday by the Natural Resources Defense Council that raises concern about the chemical's effects on human reproduction.

The environmental nonprofit organization alleges that the U.S. EPA is ignoring its own data showing broad contamination of U.S. waters by atrazine, a known endocrine disruptor that affects human and animal hormones.

"The extent of contamination we found in the data was breathtaking and alarming," said Andrew Wetzler, director of NRDC's Wildlife Conservation Program and deputy director of NRDC's Midwest Program, as well as one of the report's authors. "The EPA found atrazine almost everywhere they looked."

The contamination data in the report was obtained as the result of a legal settlement and Freedom of Information Act requests, the NRDC said.
