I'm not too sure of the quality of bottled water.

A Reverse Osmosis system is good in that it doesn't require electricity to generate clean drinking water. The problem is it consumes a lot of water in the purification process (85% of the water you put in is lost).

We use jug filters at home but they're quite small and you need to refill them often. So the best 'green' alternative to bottled water is a good home water filter.

If you're the DIY type, you can make one of your own and drive the cost down to cents.

Cleaning can be done by boiling for about 10 minutes. I lived overseas and boiled all of our water. However, if you are looking for water that tastes like spring water, you need to go with a filter. the initial investment is steep, but over time it pays for itself and is more convenient. They also have cheaper pitchers that have a filtration system in them, but you have to keep them filled.

We have pipe problems, the landlord said he will fix it but still hasnt, and every now and then we get brown water coming out, someone said its rust from the pipes, then it clears up again, i only drink from it when its clear only because i have to when im thirsty, but i still think its got harmful stuff in it??? It leaves kind of a little dry feeling on my tongue? I dont know if its just dust particles? What could i be drinking and what effects does it have on my body??

There could be alum in the water, or other potassiums and salts, which gives you the 'dry' feeling. Get a water filter for the faucet. That will take most of the crud out of the water, and you won't have to worry all those minerals and heavy metals.

Put in a reverse osmosis filter. It will produce the cleanest water possible, short of distillation. I installed the filter in my laundry room and the water line runs through the floor into the kitchen cupboards and supplies water to a small tap on the side of the sink. This saves undercounter space and allows easy filter access. I bought the system on eBay. Total price installed was about $130.
