Because they are junk! And Proctor & Gamble (parent company) doesn't care either. I've tried to contact them for their "warranty" and no luck. When this filter kicks, I'm buying something else!
Review of Brita Faucet Mount Water Filter System. See what eFilterWater thinks about this faucet water filter system.
I had a PUR but it did'nt do anything for my water.
PUR is actually one of the best on the market if you are getting the right filters for it. They actually remove more from your water than any other faucet type filters. You might want to consider a whole house filter if the water is that bad. You can get a good one at Sears..They are salt filters that you just add salt and the chemical uses salt water to clean itself during the back wash cycle. Depending on how hard and dirty your water is you will have to put in a bag of rock salt anywhere from once a week to every few months. They are easy to install. Just cut into the main water line in the house and hook the incoming water into the inlet and the outgoing line in the other side. Plug it into 110VAC, set it to back wash when it is convenient for you, probably at night while you sleep, and then just enjoy clean water. If it is bad to drink and cook with, it is bad to bath with also.

Reduces unpleasant odor
Filter life of up to 2 months or 200-Gallons
This question has a lot of variables to it,,,,It depends on if you have hard or soft water? if you have rust stains that show up in your sinks you have hard water, with this I'd say change your cartridge every month, Some faucet mounted filters have a built in gauge to show you when to change the cartridge, refer to the Manual that came with it to see if it does have this feature, and yes it may be wise to change the whole faucet mounted system when its due because some of the cartridges can be expensive!~!!!.

First leading brand shown to reduce trace levels of pharmaceuticals (pharmaceutical reduction is not certified by NSF/ANSI or state standard)
Certified to remove 10 times more contaminants than the leading brand's pitcher filter
Replaces previous three-stage filter
Does the company accept these cartridges to recycle? Or is this another item to add to our overflowing landfills? Appreciate any knowledge or suggestions.
The activated carbon can be considered good for the environment. It's essentially charcoal. As for the plastic outer packaging, you should have considered the environmental impact of that during your purchase decision...
Our tap water is tasting pretty odd. We live in a apartment so we can only install the faucet mount type.
i agree with robert, and if you buy the multi packs of filters when you buy replacements you will save a couple of dollars off of each, they can be purchased in single, two packs, and three packs. the three pack offers the greatest savings if you can find them, and afford to lay out that much dough all at once for a three to six month supply, depending on use. pur makes a tip up filter and a twist knob model that are faucet mounted. we've been using ours for around 11 years and just replaced our original one just over a year ago. the replacement one had a defect so i contacted pur to ask about a repair for it. they sent me a complete new one, rush mail and i had it in three days. in the mean time i had used a piece from the old one to make it work until we got the replacement, they told me to keep both of them, so i gave the other one to my mom for her house. and they sent me a coupon for a free filter for my inconvenience! nice company to do business with if you ask me, they stand behind their products! i know that you'll be happy with it if you go with pur, good luck.

On the topic of failures, broken, and poorly designed stuff. I’ve had a PUR faucet mount filter for about 15 days under a year and it’s literally sprung a leak:

I’ve been watching with intrigue as it had more an more stress fractures over time. I’m betting the pressure pulsations combined with the mix of plastics (white and the clear for the window) allowed some points of stress concentration along the window which led to the cracks propogating around the filter and ultimately a broken PUR water filter. I was half hoping for a spectacular failure one of these days, but the filter has finally sprung a leak that sprays about 8 feet across my apartment. I’m moving in a week or so and I’ll just buy a new one (which is conveniently cheaper than buying a new filter. . . what a scam).
UPDATE:
I’ve purchased a OmniFilter F1 Series A Faucet Filter hoping it would work better/as well as the PUR filter. This filter has a different designed filter housing (transparent and a single piece), and the filters are much much cheaper. These filters are available at Menards or Farm and Fleet (large hardware stores) along side the PUR and Brita filters.
