gear review: platypus cleanstream gravity water filter system

For quite awhile now, a recurring battle in my head and in my life has involved adequate water purification on the trail.

It started with me carrying 6 Liters of water on my very first trip.  That’s just over 13 lbs of water.  No-go.

On the next few trips, I used a Katadyn Hiker filter.  Overall good solution, but I found that when I was hot and tired after a long day on the trail, pumping was less than enjoyable and took too much time and effort when I was setting up basecamp and needed 3-4L for camp chores, cooking, and hydration. .3 micron filter, pumps at a rate of 1L per minute (if you’re pumping fast, the filter is new, and the water is pretty clean).  This system eliminated the harmful bacteria, but did nothing against viruses.  Good for up to 200 Gallons (757 liters and change) before needing to change the filter (assuming you had pristine water to start with).  The system (and the first filter costs about $70, replacement filters are $40).  I wanted a better system, preferably one that required no pumping.
