Reverse Osmosis

The cultural collision here is almost tectonic, reminiscent of the San Andreas fault underfoot. While the continental drift of this country continues to the West, and recently south to the sunbelt, Latin American surges towards a Northern future, its swelling masses straining at the bulging borderline. The pressure increases daily with a seismic obdurancy and the few points where the impasse gives (such as the amnesty program) send damaging ripples through some very deep structures on both sides.

The similarity between our West and Mexico’s North is underlined in many aspects of the cultures. The border (frontera) areas of Mexico are politically rebellious and threaten the entrenched Capital city establishment through sheer wealth, explosive growth, and a dynamic,youthful leading-edge cachet. Northerners see their bread as buttered at least as liberally by Japanese and other Pacific Rim investors and vendors as by the ossifed domestic political/industrial complex. Traditional Mexico takes a dim view of American influences on frontier economics, politics, and even language–just as many here are alarmed by the West’s influx of new racial and cultural groups and the eroding of the status of English. The North has always been the “wild west” of Mexico; even cowboy-tinted music of ranches, pickups, and cheatin’ hearts that would be called Wetern here is “Norteno” music in Mexico. More subtly, but perhaps of as much importance as the types of variables digified by graphs and commentary in print, is the image of the North as a sort of “last frontier.” Just as many Americans head West in psycho-social pilgrimages they don’t clearly understand (it’s been pointed out that nobody ever decides to chuck it and head to Philadelphia to get their life together), the allure of the frontier that draws millions of peasants from starvation farms in Chiapas and Oaxaca to huddled clumps in Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez is more a “streets of gold” dream than anything definite. It’s a fugitive zone as well as a gold rush; addicts drift North, and transvestites, and prostitutes and bankrupts, and unwed mothers disgraced out of their villages. The border is Mexico’s Edge City, an imaginary line at once glittering with promise and dark with dread.

Disadvantages Of Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times, reverse osmosis water filters; such has been the trend in protecting what we drink the past 30 years. Unfortunately, these systems simply cannot live up to their hype for a number of reasons, as you will see below.

The original purpose for these filtration systems was for commercial and industrial use. Demineralization is necessary for machinery and other utilities, since scaling and corrosion might occur otherwise. Trouble is, we are not robots. In this case, “What is good for the goose is not good for the gander”! In short, reverse osmosis water filters can remove what we need, as well as fail to keep out what can harm us.

The inefficiency of this filter is perhaps its most glaring disadvantage. As much as 80-95% of the water is wasted; forcing it through those tiny pores under such pressure requires a spectacularly large amount of electricity. This isn’t good for your bills or the environment.
