Sorry, soapy water won't cut it; and in fact will probably make things worse. Soap won't get rid of hard water scaling - it'll just scum it up. Soap won't get rid of any mold or fungi - it'll actually feed them. Use a commercially available RO membrane cleaning solution. They have to meet government requirements.

will buying a higher flow rate membrane of a reverse osmosis save more water?

It takes quite a few number of hours for the standard Watts Premier RO to fill 3 gallons of water. They say it's 4 gallon of waste water to get 1 gallon of filtered water. What happens if I replace the RO membrane with one that has higher output, say going from a 50 to a 75 or 100 gallon per day membrane, will that save more water?
If you haven't used RO, please do not comment. When I mention "wasted" water, I mean the city water that is wasted. as you know, on average RO wastes 4 gallons of city water to every 1 gallon of city water. please post only relevant answers.

Depends what you mean by "save more water". Reverse Osmosis converts normally sea (or saline) water to fresh water by forcing it through a membrane of a certain density. You can get a bigger one and you will fill your tank quicker, but as for saving water, don't see the relevance as the water that is "wasted" is no good to you as it is brine.

I have a 1 micron sediment filter before water enters the water softener, and use Rust Remover type salt in the brine tank. I've read that iron will clog the RO membrane quickly and it will need to be replaced. An alternative to get rid of any built up iron inside the softener is to pour a cup of vinegar into the solution, but not on top of the salt and force it to regenerate.

My RO system has been working flawlessly for over two years with the original RO membrane.

    Toray sets up membrane JV in Beijing

    A groundbreaking ceremony for a large membrane production facility was held in the industrial development area of Shunyi Airport, Beijing, China, on 24 August 2009.

    Japan's Toray Industries Inc and China National BlueStar (Group) Co Ltd announced at the ceremony that the companies had on 17 July 2009 established a water treatment joint venture Toray BlueStar Membrane Co Ltd (TBMC) with headquarters in Beijing.

    China BlueStar holds 49.9% and Toray a 50.1% in the project. TBMC is planning to invest approximately Yuan 500 million (approximately US$ 73 million) in construction of facilities for production of reverse osmosis membrane and assembly of membrane elements.

    The plant is scheduled to go into production in October 2010 with an annual production capacity of 6.18 million m² of RO membrane and 130,000 RO membrane elements.
