we're trying to figure this out because we have a boil water advisory, should we trust the water from the filtration system or not?
No. Even if you have an ultraviolet light source somewhere in the system, (that will help kill some of the bacteria) you're better off boiling the water if under advisory. Most filtration systems don't have filters small enough to catch coliform or e coli - Better safe than sorry and all that

not for the whole house, just under sink. Anyone have one that they are really happy with?
GE reverse osmosis (under the sink) filtration systems are sold at Home Depot. You can research them online at www.homedepot.com.
I have a friend of mine who purchased one a year ago he has been happy with it. It was around $170 or something like that.

Water filter system produces continuous supply of fresh, crisp, wonderful-tasting water from the tap, removing major contaminants to below EPA minimum levels
Quickly attaches to faucet, and conversion kits are available (sold separately) to mount under the sink
Easily replaced filter produces approximately 1,500 gallons of water before it needs replacing, or enough to last one year for a family of four
We just got a reverse osmosis water filtration system. Everytime we get a glass of water, it gurgles for about 30 min after wards. Is this normal?
Yes. Reverse Osmosis works by using water pressure to force water through a semi permeable membrane as it does this the particles that are to large to go through go into the waste water and down the drain. Your system is refilling the reservoir after you empty some out.
I just changed the filters in my reverse osmosis filtration system. The instructions say to run the water for 24 hours. This seems excessive with the drought. Do I really need to let the water run for that long?
Is there carbon in the filters? Do they put things in filters that we shou;dnt be consuming and how do we know it is all out after 3 tanks?
Over the next 24 hours, you will need to fill the tank and emply it at least 3 times. It is done that way to get the carbon out.
Is there an alternative to those pricey GE filters for my GE reverse osmosis water filtration system?
You don't have to buy the GE brand. There are different choices and prices available on-line. However, don't go super cheap. Not all RO filters are made alike. There are definitely inferior products on the market.
To check the effectiveness of your RO filter, you might want to install a TDS Monitor like this:

It also helps to determine when it is time to change the filter.
I suggest you stick with a brand name like GE or Watts, etc, but look for a vendor with the best deal. Making sure your water is clean is important.

St. John water system violations on east bank cited By Cathy Hughes September 04, 2009, 5:00AM
For the second time since 2003, state health officials are directing St. John the Baptist Parish to clean up the east bank water system and rid it of high levels of contaminants.
In an order issued this week, the state Department of Health and Hospitals laid out 34 violations -- ranging from high levels of trihalomethanes in the water to a failure to regularly test water -- and a timeline for correcting them. If the system does not improve, the parish could face thousands of dollars in penalties.
Trihalomethanes are a byproduct of chlorine and organic matter in the water, said Lauren Mendes, a DHH spokeswoman. Since the order was issued, she said, state testing has shown the parish is below the maximum threshold for the chemical.
While parish officials emphasized that the water is safe for consumption, long-term exposure to trihalomethanes -- say, 10 to 20 years -- can be dangerous, one expert said. Bob Reimers, a Tulane University professor of environmental health and sciences, said trihalomethanes can form carcinogens, cancer-forming agents.
