I have a 75 gallon tank and am planning on putting in discus. How do you use a reverse osmosis filter system?
you don't automatically need one....
In fact i rarely see them, not to say they don't work but know your water first.
second Discus are now being breed in straight up tap water and don't need half the water conditioning they use to.
So ask were your getting them from if they are in fact breed in city water. If not you may want to move on.
An R.O system is just a tank with a membrane, tap water goes threw and gets squeezed threw a .5 to .1 micron membrane into a holding tank.
then out a spout to you.
Use that water to fill your tank, most people buy small r.o systems and put them under there kitchen sink.
Other people to just to a water store and buy 15 gallon jugs of the stuff for 4 dollars.
good luck!!!
The number one reason for low water flow from a reverse osmosis system is due to the holding tank losing its air pressure. This video describes ...
fish tank water quality-can the RO/DI water be added to tank(with salt) without using water conditioners, like you would for tap water.
I use RO/DI water to top off and to make saltwater, but I don't add any conditioners to it. It's really not necessary unless your filters are exhausted. If you don't already, use a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter to check your RO/DI filter's efficiency.

I have a 4 gallon tank which is supposed to have 7 lbs. with the tank empty. I need to know the precise procedure to follow. Thank you in advance.
Assuming you're talking about the pressure tank, which consists of an air chamber and a diaphram to hold pressure against the water, you should have a psi guage installed in the tank and an inlet (similar to a tire valve). Then, add 7 P.S.I. with a hand pump, foot pump or compressor. CAUTION: if you use a compressor that handles tire inflation, tools etc., be very quick! and prepared to release some air.
I am having major problems stabilizing my tank. My tap water is Reverse Osmosis and I just seem to get a bad "slime" over everything including my fish. I have lost all my fish including my algae eater. I need help. I have a 29 gallon tank. I had Neon's, a Betta and my algae eater and they are all dead.
You have RO tap water? That's a new one on me, do you mean you have a water softner? What are the exact parameters on your tap water?
RO water lacks minerals that freshwater fish need, you need to add these minerals back into the water in order for it to be suitable for freshwater fish. This is what you're missing if that really is RO water coming out your tap. Usually for freshwater they recommend RO water is mixed with regular tap water also.
For instance here's one designed for freshwater planted tanks:

Any good aquatics store (one that works with marine and knows their stuff) should be able to recommend you some products.
water quality in saltwater aquarium
Water conditioners will remove chlorine or chloramine (you should contact your water prodider to make certain of which they use and that you're using the proper conditioner to remove it) and it will also neutralize some metals which may be harmful to your fish.
It DOESN'T remove nitrate or phosphate which is also present in many water supplies (and some providers add the phosphate to help prevent pipe corrosion). Since both nitrate and phosphate are plant (and algae) fertilizers, this can make a huge difference in maintaining your tank. By controlling the nitrate and phosphate, you reduce the possibilty of cyanobacteria, diatoms, and other "nuisance" algaes.
It's downside is that it also removes some beneficial elements like calcium and magnesium which are used by corals and other inverts. Some is replaced by the salt mix, but if you have organisms that use these heavily, you might need to add a supplement to replace what was lost.
While it's not absolutely necessary to use RO water for tanks with just fish, or fish and live rock, it is strongly suggested for reef tanks, just to reduce the amount of nitrate and phosphate in the water

(Click to enlarge) At the desalination research site in Marana, Umur Yenal, who recently earned a PhD, and Andrea Corral, a doctoral student, hold water filtration membranes that are part of a Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing unit, or VSEP. Water is forced at high pressure through an assembly of 19 of the filters, which are shaken to settle particulates. The process is a highly effective way to reduce salinity in water. .
August 26, 2009A parched compound within earshot of the whoosh of I-10 traffic in Marana, about 20 miles northwest of the University of Arizona campus, seemed an unlikely place for fish. But there were tilapia, darting to the surface and then back into the murky depths of a tank of brine. Hedgerows of saltbush fit more naturally into the desert setting. A putting-green-sized carpet of salt-tolerant turf grass lay at the end of a row of saltbush.
