Reverse osmosis does not have to produce waste water at all, but in that case the filtering system gets clogged in minutes. So, the waste water is produced not in process of reverse osmosis, but in processes of cleaning the filters. All the impurities are held in filter system, until washing, when they go to the washing water, which gets polluted.

I just got a new RO filter, 3 stage filtration. There are two tubes where water comes out of one is faster than the other. I don't know which one is the pure water and which one is the waste water. (ie: with an RO filter do you get more waste water or more pure water?)
Its an aquapro brand. How can i tell for sure, coz i collected and tasted both the water. The Slower one wasn't the "water taste" i'm used to, while the faster one tasted better than tape water.

The water purifier we are using at our home is producing gallons of waste water.
RO is rather benign, and its products could likely be used to water plants. Brine water softeners are another matter. Even so, that water could be used to flush toilets.
RO water is very good at removing toxins like lead, chlorine, nitrates, nitrites, and more. Depending on the type and quality of the carbon prefilters will determine how much organic molecules are removed. RO water will not remove bacteria and the systems must be cleaned periodically to remove accumulations of bacteria. You can add a UV light to kill off a large percentage of bacteria from the final product water. The disadvantage is they do waste some water, and require maintenance. I use RO water and it is great. If you look on EBAY they have the best prices for the systems and replacement filters.

Reverse osmosis membranes allows water to pass through pores, preventing dissolved solids and suspended materials from passing through. Feed water flows over the membrane surface, keeping apart the treated water from the waste water, producing up to 99 percent rejection. The production of up to 99 percent rejection is that some salts and organics may pass through the membranes, thereby 100 percent is not accomplished. Generally, there is no more than 2 percent of salts and organics that passes through the membrane. Softening the water reduces mineral fouling of the reverse osmosis membrane surface, thus, forming soluble salts which does not generally cause scaling. It is recommended that a softener be used on high hardness water to prevent mineral scaling of the reverse osmosis membrane.
