Okay, so I bought a Pur water filter pitcher so that I would stop buying so much bottled water, with the intention to be more environmentally friendly.
The time just came to replace the cartridge for the first time. What do I with the old cartridge? Can it be recycled at all? I don't like thorwing things in the trash if I don't have to.
better dump it in the back yard of your neighbour at night without making any noice of throwing.

Otherwise, I would just trash it

I would like to perform a test to see if my Brita Filter cartridge is still effective. What would be your suggestion in designing an experiment to test the water filtered by these cartridge?
I have access to use microscope, petri dishes, incubator, x-ray diffraction machine, gas chromatography, pH meter, and regular chemical experiment equipments.
thanks in advance
You need to test the water before and after filtration. This will let you determine what, if anything, the filter removed (or added) to (from) the water.
The microscope can be used to detect particulates. The petri dishes, and incubator can be used for microbial (bacteria and fungi) growth, but the shouldn't be any microbes in your drinking water before you filter it. The govenment has a TMDL of 0 for all microbes.
I'm not sure how X-ray difraction works and I believe gas chromatography take a small amount of a solid material and vaporizes it, so I don't think it would work.
You can test pH before and after, but that won't give you very much information.
I need to pre-filter water from river before it gets to sediment cartridge filter. I am thinking it will work but am concerned algae nay be a problem and clog backwash sand filter prematurely. Anyone had experience with this? Cartridge filter clogs in about a week so is an expensive problem. Any alternative way of doing this?
Apparently the algae would be a problem in a pool type backwash filter. It would propagate in a warm vessel. Also backwash (with the same supply of water) would only add to the problem. Any other ideas?

Cleaning water filters - WhiteBlaze - Appalachian Trail
I run bleach through my ceramic filter after every trip - I think it was suggested by manufacturer (msr). The reason I do it is to prevent moisture in the ceramic from molding during the drying process. The filter goes on most trips, almost every weekend, and I have never had a problem. I use a 50/50 bleach water mixture. Not sure how much a "pinch" (from original post) of bleach would be - can you pinch bleach? I also try to do 100 - 150 mile section hikes twice a year. The filter on the Hiker Pro has a 750 liter life and after 4 years I simply replaced it. I lost it on a hike and replaced it with a Katadyn Vario because it has a faster throughput and I can connect a nalgene bottle directly to the pump. The Vario also has like a 2000 liter life.

Maintaining your water filter is necessary if you want to continue drinking clean water. Although it can be a bit of a hassle, by maintaining your water filter you will always have access to the cleanest drinking water possible. Even though each filter system has its own specific maintenance method, there comes a time when a new filter replacement cartridge needs to be put in.
Top of the range filters do not require maintenance compared to basic types. Whole house filters is an example of the more elaborate filters which need little maintenance; they usually have a self cleaning mechanism attached into the filter which clean the filters every time water is being pumped out. These types of water filters require filter changing every 3 years, there isĀ however the inbuilt pre-sediment filter replacement cartridge which needs to be changed every three too six months. This need to be replaced because overtime these filters get worn out from the large amounts of sediments and bacteria being filtered out daily and once worn out, they will not work effectively and you will be in danger of drinking contaminated water.
