Okay, so I bought a Pur water filter pitcher so that I would stop buying so much bottled water, with the intention to be more environmentally friendly.
The time just came to replace the cartridge for the first time. What do I with the old cartridge? Can it be recycled at all? I don't like thorwing things in the trash if I don't have to.
better dump it in the back yard of your neighbour at night without making any noice of throwing.
The water cartridge/filter for the ice/water dispenser in my fridge needs replacing every six months or so. At $80 I hesitate to get a new one right away. Is there a potential health threat or will it just be inert?

Tap water is safe to drink, the taste is not as good as filtered though.

I used my filter for about two months before replacing it. It really depends on the amount of calcification in your water. If the magnesium is very visible on the surface of hot tea, you'll be using it about a month.
The other thing is the reduction of plastic waste from bottles.
In Northern England the water is very low in calcified deposits, so the water doesn't really need filtering, just allow the light chlorine aroma to disappear. In the places like the South East, the water is horribly calcified.
When I hook up the vacuum on my Intex above ground pool, as i'm trying to vacuum the algae from the bottom, it is just as quickly being sent back in through the return. I have replaced that filter cartridge, and it still does this. Before I can get half wat through vacuuming it, the water is too cloudy to see the bottom. Before I start vacuuming, the water is clear and all the green/brown is on the bottom. Why is the green crud coming back in through the return?
This is an above ground pool with a paper filter cartridge. There is no option on the pump to switch to "waste" and I put shock it in the pool once a week and change the filter once a week.
And since this is a pump with a filter cartridge, not a sand filter, there is no backwash option.
Just a suggestion. Walmart sells a $20 vacuum that hooks up to your water hose. It works awsome. They also sell this stuff called Shock It. Works good.

I used the more expensive (mostly Hoya) UV filters for years on every lens for the express purpose of not having anything come into contact with my expensive glass's front element and risk a scratch or even a smudge, and I have to say that I think that worked out well for me. I've cleaned the filters plenty, and don't care if I rub, scrub or scrape on them as needed - no big loss if I kill the thing. Then one day I was doing a thorough cleaning of my sensor and while looking at a test shot notices some vague concentric rainbow-colored rings, kind of like moire patterns on the otherwise blank image (looking for specks of dust). Just on a gut feeling, I removed the filter and recreated the test shot - concentric rings gone. Put it back on - they're back.
