i've got a brita water filter i think buying bottled water is more expensive and it causes more pollution than a brita maxtra cartridge which u get a month a time from in your brita filter jug!!!
I love my Brita. But I think it's more that the water is super cold from the fridge that makes it taste better.
How to test drinking water in this free water purification video. Expert: Gregory Gibbert Bio: Gregory Gibbert has been working in the water ...
I have a small aquatic turtle, (he looks like a RES, but without the red marks, not sure what he is.) about a 5 inch shell measurement.
Even keeping up with frequent water and filter cartridge changes, I'm still getting a large buildup of algae, mostly on the edges of his basking rock, and on the turtle's shell.
I use filtered tap water, and the only chemicals I add are one to remove chlorine, and one to help with waste breakdown. My filter is a regular aquarium filter, rated for 60 gallons. (the tank is a 20 gallon long) I've read that the algae destroyers you would use in a regular aquarium could be harmful to turtles, so I'm hesitant to try that. I've put a few plants in the tank, but he tends to uproot them and eat them.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to slow the growth of algae in the tank?
Really, your best bet is to add live plants. Algea is oportunistic and will grow in excess if there is no competition in the tank. Anacharis works wonders. It eats the turtle feces, is an oxygenizer, the turtle can eat it, it looks kinda pretty, and it helps keep algea down. You can also add Exo-Terra's Biotize but really, having the size of filter you do, your best bet is live plants, even if they get dug up if they're aquatic plants they'll do ok.

I have a larger Britta water purifyer tank (holds about 2 gallons) - just recently I noticed a green tinge to the water color and looked inside - there is some green colored aglae growing on the insides of the tank down where the filtered water is. Has anyone had this happen? What would cause this and is it dangerous if we drank some of that water, What could happen to us health wise? We kept the tank in the Frig and change the cartridge filter on a regular basis. I am wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen. I was really shocked, I always had good luck with Britta in the past. Could it be the quality of the tap water we are putting into the filter having bacteria in it? The water is ground water from a well. Thanks for any advice on this situation.
I have a brita water filter as well. I havent had that problem but i dont have the two gallon version i just have the pitcher version. I would have to ask how long have you had the filter in there? and if u have had it more than the time recommended by the manufacturer GET A NEW ONE. but if its still within limits i would clean both parts of it (the part waiting to be filtered and the filtered part) THOROUGHLY. if your still having problems after that i would have to say buy a new filter. You water source shouldnt matter. Your water is basically filtered by charcoal and any bacteria in the water shouldnt affect the color. BUT BE WORRIED ABOUT THE COLOR!

I usually just wash it in running tap water (we live in a small town so I don't think they put chlorine in the water) to get all that sticky brown stuff off of it and I just throw it out with that brown stuff on it when I replace it. also what is a bio filter cartridge?, my new filter uses one and it specifically tells me not to wash it just to rinse it in slow running water to remove excess buildup and not to worry because discoloration is normal so how do I get good bacteria off that? what is this sticky brown stuff that's everywhere in my filter?, what do I do with it?. I know I'm doing some things horrible wrong which could and possibly will kill my fish since my actions haven't al ready so how do I do this the right way
I have a coldwater aquarium with goldfish and a Aqua tech filter and some 6 year old no name filter
Bio Filter is where the good bacteria lives..You need good bacteria to start a fish tank, that is why u cycle the water up to 6 weeks b4 u add fish.
Aqua tech i believes thay use 3 items 1, the sponge on the lowerst side, 2 carbons at the mid that last Bio-filter at the top, with air Bio-filter will let the good bacteria gown faster, that is why thay places on the top.never use tap water wash tham because tap water will kill all this hard works u did, just rubbing tham inside ur fish tank will clean it.(u change tham when thay falling aprts, it can take year to that happens) same with the sponges, u can just rubbing the brown stuffs off INSIDE ur fish tank , it will cleans it. ( same with this sponges have good bacteria in it, and can be re-use, to the point thay start to falling aprts that replaces it ) Do ur 25% water change..should be all good as new!
Without all this good bacteria, ur water in the tank always running on cycleing.
I hope this helps good luck!
I set up a 24 gallon nano cube about a month ago. I have 3 fish and about 20 pounds of live rock. I originally used tap water and I got a ton of brown slime algea. I've been doing 5 gallon water changes every two weeks with filtered water (using an aquarium specific cartridge type tap water filter) and I added a poly pad filter to remove phosphate. The brown stuff is gone but now I have a lot of green hair algea. It appears to be dying, it's lost most of it's green color now. My question is, will the hair eventually come off the rock as it dies or should I remove the rock and try to scrub off the hairs? I don't have any corals yet because I want to handle this algea problem first. Any suggestions?
The hair algae will fall off once it dies, but you need to treat the root of the problem. 5 gallon water changes every 2 weeks is not enough. If you tested your nitrates, I'm sure you'd find they're far beyond "normal" levels, which is why you're even dealing with these algae troubles in the first place. The phosphate pad will help, but it is only a temporary fix-- you need more water changes.

high nitrates in tank and tap water.. - Reef Sanctuary
I am having problems with my nitrate levels in my tank.. currently i am doing 20% water changes weekly to try and bring it down.. today i tested after the water change and the nitrates were still very high.. so i decided to test my tap water.. i have well water.. after testing the tap found that the nitrate levels in my tap water are 20ppm.. after discovering this i realize that with that much nitrate in the tap water i probably am not gonna get it down much. Consider it this way... if you start doing your 20% water changes with zero nitrate water, and are adding zero nitrates through feeding or fish waste... Week One you will be at 64ppm, Week two will give 51, Week three will give 41... and so on at 20% decrease per week, it will still take a LONG time to get your nitrates into aceptable levels of 10 or below

I would use this bottle most at home. I believe that using open containers aids in the spread of infectious diseases, so I always use a closed container to drink from. I currently have a polyurethane canteen, which I am well aware is not BPA-free. I asked for a stainless steel water bottle for my birthday, but I didn't get one. Hopefully I will have one soon!
