So yesterday, after vaccuming out the gravel of my tank and changing the filter cartridge, I added some water clarifier to take care of all the stuff I stirred up in the cleaning process. Unfortunately, I am an idiot and was measuring out the clarifier over the tank. I spilled it and probably got about 7 times too much clarifier in the tank. I did a 20 percent water change right away and a 20 percent change today and the water is still cloudy! The fish seem to be fine..... What should I do? Will the water clear up on its own? Will the fish be alright?
I kept the filter running on high all night since the spill occured. Should I do this? It is a filter for a 10-30 gallon tank and I have a 10 gallon tank.....
It's been 24 hours now and its still cloudy.....any more suggestions?
Hiya!!=] well, i guess just leave it alone for now and wait for it to clear. as far as future use goes, id STOP using the clarifier. its added chemicals for nothing. in a fish tank, really the only chemicals should be used are tap water conditioners, medications (only if nescesarry) adn in an absolute LAST attempt, meaning youve tried everyting else and it doesnt work. the filter will take care of all the debris youve stirred up within a few hours, so just leave it be =]

I have a 35 gallon hexagonal fish tank. I have a whisper 1 filter on it and a smaller heater. My neighbor said that the heater would be fine, and that the filter will push the water around. I have an air pump. I have 3 Red Devil and 3 Jaguars so 6 african cichlids.
How often should I change the water and how much?
How often should I change the filter?
I currently have ick, how do I get rid of it?(currently using quick cure for about a week and I just rinsed out the cartridge)
What water tempature should I put the tank at?
And anything else I forgot please help me out. One day I decided I really wanted fish and need to know how to care for them.
Also can I use the same tactics on my 10 gallon with 2 Green Spotted Puffers?
I'm a little short on cash right now to get a bigger tank.
Ok you should only have 1 inch of fish per gallon, or else you will only continue to have problems (like ick). Depending on the size of your fish, you may be over crowded. Your cichlids are going to get big and as as they grow you will become over crowded so if you can't afford a larger tank, you may need to re-home some fish. Otherwise you can have problems with these teritortial fish fighting or your water chemistry being thrown off which stesses the fish making them susceptible to disease.
You can treat ich easily with medication from the pet store. You should also add and maintain 1 tsp of aquarium salt per gallon. It stimulates their slime coat so will treat and prevent ich.
If the tank has been up and running a while, meaning that it is established, 20% water change once a month is recommended. The filter media should be changed as needed.. you will notice it clogging up. never do a water change and a filter change at the same time,. It disrupts the beneficial bacteria and could cause problems.
The temperature should be kept between 72-80 degrees. Buy an aquarium thermometer. it will have a green "safe zone" making it easy to monitor, and they just cost a couple of bucks.
Just wanted to ask some questions on taking care of the turtle, I'm hopefulling going to get this week - I have already set up the tank... (I'M GETTING A MUSK TURTLE)
Here is what I have:
Tank
UVA / UVB Light
2 Basking Spots
Artifical Hiding Places & Plants
Mealworms & Pelleted Food (going to get 5 feeder fish per month, for now, also)
Water Thermometer
Land Thermometer
Filter
Calcium / Vitamin D3 supplement
Question #1:
Is that all sufficient for a turtle; anything else I need - I decided agaisnt a heater, because my room is pretty warm (around 75 degrees; don't know why)? Do I need a screen (the water level is pretty low because I'm most probably getting a hatchling at a turtle swap)?
Question #2: I've set up everything; do I need to turn the filter on, even though I don't have any animals in the tank just yet?
Question #3: I'm Placing my turtle in a 20 gallon tank because Musks (a stinkpot, is what I'm getting) usually get 3-4 inches; is that okay for his entire life?
Question #4: How often do I have to change the filter cartridges?
Question #5: How much do I feed musk turtles; and do they need a bowl of water (i read that turtles drink water; so I bought a bowl; what kind of water is this - just regular or what)?
!) Sufficient. You don't need a screen to keep the turtle in but it will also keep insects out.
2) No, but it wouldn't hurt.
3) No. But a 40 gallon tank would probably suffice.
4) Whenever the filter seems to be ineffective. That will depend on the size of the filter and the tank and how often, how much, and where you feed the turtle.
5) Feed all the turtle will eat at one time, then stop until the next feeding time. The turtle will be in water most of the time, won't it? Why would it need a separate bowl?
We have a 2.5 gallon fish tank that we purchased about 7 weeks ago. (It is a Littlest Pet Shop aquarium that our 5 year old BEGGED for. It only comes in the 2.5 gallon.) It has a heater and filter. We purchased four male fancy guppies for it per the PetSmart employee's suggestion.
For cleaning, we have been doing a complete water change about every 10 days to keep the water clean and clear. We change the filter cartridge as needed. We feed them tropical fish flakes. During water changes, we treat the water with a dechlorinator and aquarium salt. Are we doing something wrong?
We found one guppy dead on the bottom of the tank this morning. He had no obvious physical problems and he seemed perfectly fine last night. The remaining 3 are actively swimming and eating with no apparent problems.
The only thing that happened recently was that our electricity went out the day before yesterday due to an ice storm, and their filter and heater were off for about 5 hours. When it went off I immediately changed the water (to make it a little warmer) and then wrapped the tank in scarves to hold the heat in. I also opened the little feeding door for air circulation, and added a little more aquarium salt.
I admit we are amateurs - these are our first fish. Whe felt like we were doing everything right, but please enlighten us if we are not. I want to do what is best for our fish. Any constructive advice is appreciated!
Hey it's awesome that you're asking questions: everyone was new to the hobby once:-) It's great that you're asking questions!
You should pick up a gravel vacuum at your pet store - they're cheap. You can get little ones for a small tank like yours. It looks like a little tube with a hose attached. You shake the tube in the water to activate the syphon (so you don't have to use your lips haha) and put the hose into a bucket. You dip the tube into the gravel and suck out the debris and waste in the gravel, and it empties out into your bucket. The gravel vac sucks up the debris and leaves the gravel.
Your fish tank needs a colony of beneficial bacteria to break down waste and keep the tank cycled so cleaning the whole tank or removing all the water is a bad idea, and can actually trigger your tank to cycle again. These bacteria grow on surfaces, so mostly in the filter and gravel. Every week or two (I do mine weekly, twice weekly if my nitrates are high) you should do a fifty percent water change with the gravel vacuum, then add water that is the same temp back into the tank and treat it with water conditioner. And instead of replacing your filter cartridge you should just clean it with cold tap water or old tank water and only change it when it is obviously expired. Throwing away a filter cartridge gets rid of a lot of bacteria.
You can also pick up a test kit to test your water parameters. You should have no nitrite, no ammonia and very low levels of nitrate. You should also make sure your filter disturbs the water surface quite a bit to facilitate the oxygen exchange.
My daughter would be so jellous of a littlest Pet Shop aquarium haha too cute!
Good luck:-)
I bought some glofish(not goldfish) a while back, and noticed that they started dying one by one. I had no idea why this was occurring, so I didn't do anything about it. Now all of my fish are deceased, and I'm trying to find a way to keep my tank clean, so that when I add more new fish back into my tank, they won't die. I heard that you're supposed to change the filter cartridge once a month, is this true? My friend also has glofish, and what she does everyday is she takes 3-4 inches of the water out of her tank, and replaces it with spring water that she buys by the gallon at the grocery store, and keeps next to the tank so it's the same temperature. Should I try doing this as well, or is that not a good way to clean the tank? Also, with that being said, how often should I REALLY clean the tank? As far as, cleaning the rocks, and everything inside the tank goes?
I know I should have asked these questions before I got the fish, but it's too late for that now, and I really regret it. But, I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.
Is it a bowl or tank? but if its a tank then this is what you should do. take all the water out and everything inside clean all sides with fresh water and wash gravel throughly untill water runs clear through it, then put it back in the tank. now place your filter in which you may need to clean in clean all ornaments and buy some real plants fish thrive in a tank with live plants to aid oxygen levels. you also need to put water conditioner in the water i use tap water and treat it with Aquasafe this gets rid of chlorine and other harmfull substances, then make sure the temp is ok for goldfish to live in 18-22 degrese. Now turn everything on including the light filter and anything else e.g. airpumps and leave it running for atleast a month this will give the tank time to mature and bacteria to grow to help brake down waste. After a month go buy your new fish but dont over croud the tank. leave the fish to float in its bag in your tank so the water he's in is at the same temp as yours after 10-20 mins release hinm into the tank (repeat process with any new fish) After the fish has settled in after around 2 weeks the tank will need cleaning take out around a quater of the water take out the filter medium and wah it in DIRTY tank water so you dont get rid of the good bacteria clean alge off sides and prune plans etc. when replacing water use ordanary tap water but treated with the conditioner as directed now top up the tank as well as making sure its the same temp as the water already in the tank. you should change quarter of the water once a month and do all the above clening duties. This way your tank should bacically look after its self.
Hope your new fish have better luck Dave
