So in which part of a water cartridge does the beneficial bacteria reside in? I have a 20 gallon freshwater tank.

I agree, Cycle sucks and is a waste of money, so is stress zyme. You can reuse your cartridge/filter. When you do a water change, put the old tank water in a bucket and rinse the gunk off the filter in the bucket. What I also did, my larger filters have room to add bio balls or stuff like that-meant to "house" the bacteria on. I put some of those in an aquarium net/bag I bought at the pet store. I keep that in one of my tanks, and whenever I start up a new tank or if I need to use meds in a tank that can kill off the bacteria, or for whatever reason I need it, I have some beneficial bacteria all ready to go and put that bag in the new tank.

Okay, so I bought a Pur water filter pitcher so that I would stop buying so much bottled water, with the intention to be more environmentally friendly.

The time just came to replace the cartridge for the first time. What do I with the old cartridge? Can it be recycled at all? I don't like thorwing things in the trash if I don't have to.

better dump it in the back yard of your neighbour at night without making any noice of throwing.

Hi,
In my bathtub, I replaced moen valve 1222 thinking that this would be the problem of not having water coming out of the shower.
For my surprise, I still don't have water, however when the valve is removed, there is water coming out. A few drops occur with the valve installed.
please provide me your feedback if you know what is going on.

remove the cartridge, turn 180 degrees, re-insert cartridge. It's installed upside down. To verify that the pipe rising to the shower head is not plugged, which would be unlikely in my opinion, take the cartridge out, put your hand over the cartridge hole and have someone turn the water on for you. This will force the water to go up the shower riser.

also, lubricate the cartridge with a small ammount of vaseline when you install it. This will keep the rubber washer from binding when you slide it in.

The water filter cartridge is bolted to the frame, and the drip pan is overflowing onto my kitchen floor. I used to carry the drip pan from my old fridge to the sink to empty it and wash it.

You aren't supposed to have to empty it. It has a fan that blows on it and makes it evaporate. Maybe the fan motor is bad and has stopped working and needs to be replaced, or maybe the water filter or line is leaking and it's leaking water faster than it can evaporate.

I would like to perform a test to see if my Brita Filter cartridge is still effective. What would be your suggestion in designing an experiment to test the water filtered by these cartridge?

I have access to use microscope, petri dishes, incubator, x-ray diffraction machine, gas chromatography, pH meter, and regular chemical experiment equipments.

You need to test the water before and after filtration. This will let you determine what, if anything, the filter removed (or added) to (from) the water.

The microscope can be used to detect particulates. The petri dishes, and incubator can be used for microbial (bacteria and fungi) growth, but the shouldn't be any microbes in your drinking water before you filter it. The govenment has a TMDL of 0 for all microbes.

I'm not sure how X-ray difraction works and I believe gas chromatography take a small amount of a solid material and vaporizes it, so I don't think it would work.

You can test pH before and after, but that won't give you very much information.
