We had our water softener for 7 years and the filter media lasted for 6 years. When it was time to change it, the softner released a brown dye in the water, that let us know it was time to be serviced. We had the filter media replaced and a year later the dye is being released again. The repair man says we need new filter media but I don't understand why it last so long before and this time it only lasted a year. I am wondering if our service man did it correctly last time or even if he is honest. Does anyone know anything about the Aqua Maid reverse osmosis drinking water system 5 stage unit? Is it normal to replace the media once a year?

If the dye is showing, its time. It sounds like it may have been done incorectly last time. Check all other parts around filter.

I am looking at getting a five gallon fish tank and I have it narrowed down between two tanks. One has a three-stage filtration system and the other has a power filter with filter cartridge. Here are the websites if you want to take a look.

The second is A LOT better. If you want longer living, healthier fish then the aqua gardens tank is the tank to buy.

The borehole is at 5 m deep. It is in a 3rd world country on sea side. I collect the water in a tank and treat it with alum. Then I have already a filtering system with sand and active charcoal. I think to add an additional 2 stage small filtration system (200$ thing) but it will it kill the bacterias or remove the salt ? What chemical can I use to kill the bacteria ?
Should I use an inverse osmosis system ? What flowrate can I expect for a 300 $ Osmosis plant ? How often will I need to change the membrane ?

Chlorine will kill the bacteria.

I am not able to tell you about the inverse osmosis system.

I have a kidney stone and because of that i installed a Reverse Osmosis 5 stage water purification system at home.(The machine uses a DOW membrane for Reverse Osmosis process.)

I drink a lot of this water in the hope of not aggrevating the stone and also in the hope of getting rid of the stone in the kidney. The doctor also advises me to drink a lot of water ( he did not suggest a RO filter tho)

My question is this. Is it dangerous to drink this (heavily purified) water over an extended period? Will my body be stripped of the minerals i was getting somehow from the previous water? should i buy some expensive mineral water and drink to compensate for mineral loss. Should i take some oral rehyderation salts ocassionally.

your guidance will be appreciated.
