I spend $35 to replace the carbon filter on my water filter/pitcher every few months. Would the activated carbon used by home distillers be as good an option to filter my water? The exact brand I'm thinking about is Prestige stone activated carbon (.4-1.4mm), and I would be running it through a coffee filter in the existing housing on my water pitcher.
Can any chemists - amateur or professional - tell me if this would be a good or bad idea?
Not sure but if you want more information on filters look up the website for a company callled CUNO.

I own a Katadyn Combi water filter. Carbon refill packets for it are expensive. There are many places to buy activated carbon in bulk relatively cheap. Physically it's a trivial matter to buy in bulk and use it in the filter but I'm wondering about the quality of the carbon, the form of the carbon and how suited it is for the filter or anything else I need to be aware of when buying carbon in bulk.
I think you might be in for more trouble than its worth. Activated carbon will come in a powder form, most likely. So then you'd have to open the filters, dump out the old stuff, and hope your system has enough pressure to push through that much carbon.
I would look into some heavy research on the fabrication of carbon filters before I tried to do something like that.
Its sort of like saying "gas is expensive, i think i'll just buy oil on the open market, and refine it at home to make the gasoline."

Yes and no
activated carbon removes chlorine and chloramines (chemicals your water utility puts in water to slow bacteria growth) and activated carbon removes SOME organics. Some of the oils may be removed, but they may quickly saturate the activated carbon bed and pass through. Benzene and toluene are typical organics that are removed to some degree by AC beds.
As to bacteria, in fact activated carbon provides an excellent medium for bacteria to grow. AC is porous and since it is collecting organics, it provides water, food, and darkness. perfect for bacteria. And since you're removing agents that control bacterial growth in the first place, you should expect MUCH higher bacteria counts after an AC bed.
From my decade working with AC beds.

I need to dechlorinate some water flowing at about 5-20 gpm. To do this, I want to build an activated carbon water filter large enough that I don't have to replace the carbon too often. I have some ideas, but information about carbon filters is suprisingly scarce. Does anyone have any ideas about how to design such a filter?
I have been thinking of using a barrel for the housing.
Get a pool sand filter and fill it with Activated carbon instead or or in addition to sand (depends on the screen size and grain size of the carbon).
You didn't mention the chlorine concentration as this will have an impact on sizing and life expectancy of the media.
Sodium Thiosulfate is also used as a dechlorinating agent.
Hey guys.
I just bought one of those AquaClear activated carbon filter media from a local pet store, since I couldn't find the regular carbon cartridges my filter uses.
I followed the boxes instructions by rinsing it throughly in water, but these black particles keep coming out from inside the bag, and there seems to be no end to it. I've already rinsed the media out for over 10 minutes, but the activated carbon still turns the water all dark and murky; it's beastly stuff.
But can I still put this into my power filter? Or does there seem to be something wrong with the activated carbon I just bought?
sounds to me that the carbon in the bag,has been pulverized.the particals are so small they find the way out of the bag.ten minutes.is way too long to be rinsing this carbon.the dust generated from the shipping/handling should have been rinsed away in a minute or so.take it back to the pet store.by the way, its a good idea to rinse carbon in purified water,as the tap water contaminates saturate the carbon reducing its life and ability to soak up pollutants.it should be sealed away from the air as well.

Purify Your Drinking Water | Use an Activated Carbon Water Filter ...
Carbon is probably the most powerful absorbent ever discovered by man. One pound of granulated carbon can absorb literally thousands of water contaminants. Basically, one pound of carbon has a surface area of well over 100 acres. An activated carbon water filter contains carbon which has been given a slightly positive electrical charge. There are generally two kinds of activated carbon water filters available for Activated carbon filters remove or reduce many volatile organic chemicals (VOC’s), pesticides and herbicides, as well as chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane (THM) compounds, radon, solvents and hundreds of other man-made chemicals found in tap water. Some activated carbon water filters remove some heavy metals. Compacted carbon block filters mechanically remove particles down to 0.5 micron, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, turbidity and particulates. NOT successful at removing dissolved inorganic contaminants or metals such as minerals,...
Filters for Mercury in Drinking Water | Drinking Water Quality ...
We have received at least two dozen emails from people asking how they can remove mercury and other heavy metals from their drinking water — should their water tests come up positive.
First of all, mercury may appear as an inorganic compound or an organic compound. Each requires a different method of detection and also a different means of removal.
Most at-home test kits (such as Boris Mercury Check ) test for something called free dissolved inorganic mercury. This means any mercury bound by organic compounds will not get detected.
To detect organically bound mercury as well as free dissolved mercury, also known as total mercury, scientists use more sophisticated methods of detection and that sort of testing most often must take place in a laboratory setting.
Removing Mercury From Drinking Water?
As stated earlier, a person will need different types of filters to remove the two different main types of mercury:
