Should I filter water for my emergency supply?
emergency escape chute. santa monica, ca. 2011

Figured out I'll fill some 2L bottles that are just sitting here. I'll have a supply. Just wondering if I should filter it, or keep that chlorine there?

If your water isn't running for some reason, you will drink almost anything!!

Leave it alone then if necessary bring it to a boil as in making tea or coffee.

I keep about 5 gallons of water in the pantry at all times. I just run the bottles full of water and cap them. Every 3 to 6 months I rinse the jugs with clorox water and refill them if they haven't been used recently.

I live very rural, the power goes out frequently so no water from my electric pump in my well.

Is water from a Brita filter safe for goldfish (it's supposed to eliminate 96% of chlorine)?
2011 Gear

Kind of as an emergency maneuver - and also to fill up the aquarium when some of the water evaporates...

The short answer is that yes it is safe. But common chlorine eliminators that are commonly sold in pet stores work great and are far less expensive. Basically my answer is that it is not necessary but if you want to splurge on your fish and you can afford it then go right ahead. Just know that it is not necessary.

A Brita filter, much like other filters, is a Carbon filtration system, not unlike the carbon filter you will use in the fish tank. So it will not have a terrible adverse effect on Ph Levels or that sort of thing.

Emergency! Filter stopped working.....?
Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant 1988 80s

My filter stopped working last night and it has been off for about 4 hrs. I have done two 30 per cent water changes in the 4hr period but I have to wait another 4 until I can replace the filter (I am going to buy a backup for the future) I have an air stone in there and the fish looks fine. The question is....how long can tanks go unfiltered before you have potential problems. I have only one fish (7in Asian Knife) in this 30 gallon tank so I am hoping that will be to my benefit too. Any info will be appreciated.

Holy cow! Slow down. Relax. :) You don't need to change so much water. Filters do quit working from time to time. A good game plan is to change about 10% of your water every two days (3 gallons does not take long to change at all). If your aquarium has been established for some time, your gravel and decorations and even the walls of the tank will have enough "good" bacteria to continue the nitrogen cycle without harm to your fish. It sounds as though you have a very light bioload in your aquarium since you have only one fish. After re-reading your question, don't do any water changes for three more days. You don't want to upset your nitrogen cycle and excessive water changes (60% over 8 hours) can do that. You did the right thing by adding an airstone for circulation and promotion of gas exchange. You actually should have a quite stable aquarium as is. If you do not over feed your fish, you could easilly keep your fish indefinatley without the filter so long as you change 20% of your tanks water weekly. Basically, you could have waited for about three days without the filter or water changes without any harm to your fish, but you get and A++ and a gold star for both effort and caring for your fish!

Emergency - tropical fish filter not working?
What's In My (BO/SHTF) Bag v1.0

Please help, I have just changed 1/2 the tank of water in the tank, as the nitrate was higher than ideal, and no matter what I do, my filter won't start again. I've done what my local fish-guru has told me to; plunged the sponges up and down, turned everything off and on again, but nothing is working.

I am panicking, my fish are all at the top of the tank, and the water is incredibly cloudy.

If anyone could help, it really would be so much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

The fish are likely at the top of the tank because the filter helps to add oxygen to the water. This won't help with filtration issues, but to get more oxygen into the water, take a cup of tank water and dump it back into the tank from several inches (or feet!) above the water. You'll see a lot of little bubbles in the water --that's good. It means you're aerating. Do this a few times every hour until your filter is working again. It's not a permanent fix, but it'll help to keep your fish more comfortable while you work on the problem.

What to do in a power outage with a salt water tank?

We have a biocube salt water tank with two clown fish and a fire shrimp. Our power went out last night for about 4 hours, during which I kept getting up to check on the tank because the filter went out with the power. Thankfully they're fine and the power came back on, but how long can salt water fish survive without the filter working and what should you do in that sort of an emergency?

I would check into buying a battery operated air pump. Drs. Foster and Smith sells a few very cheap, around 6.00. I bought a few after going without power for 3 days after Hurricane Charlie hit, and having airstones hooked up to my generator. Just hook it up to an air stone-everything was included with the one I bought, and that's it. Granted, these were freshwater tanks, the most important thing is to get the water agitating at the surface to allow oxygen and CO2 to exchange at the surface.

You've still got 11 days to enter our latest 1 Hour Design Challenge: Emergency Shelters . The competition asks you to design an appropriate and innovative pop-up shelter solution, in light of the earthquake in Haiti. Core77 will donate $500 in the name of the winner to Architecture for Humanity's Earthquake Support Program.

Below, two shelters that truly "pop-up" and make use of their compactness to fold in a few basic necessities.

A shelter, multipurpose bag, water cantines, blankets, towels and a water collector/filter are all contained within single shell which itself is the water collector. The strap that comes on the basin can be detached and used on the bag so that while the shelter is needed no excess material is left. The shelter works like an emergency raft (pull tab for automatic inflation) but with a breathable cloth making up the walls.

Look over the guidelines , sharpen your pencils, and get your entry in by February 28th!
