What does installation of a whole house sediment water filter cost ?
Best Use of a Coffee filter

I am buying a house with two full baths and one half bath. the master bath comes with jacuzzi jet.

The town water is yellowish, with sediment, and rust in the hot summer month.

How much does it cost to get licensed plumber to out in a whole house sediment filter for the water supply ?

You could do it yourself, if you are handy and can sweat pipe. A few guys at work have done the same thing. They made up a system with 2 filters. That way they could transfer the flow to one and when the filter got dirty, they close two valves and open the other two and use the second filter while they change out the first one to get it ready when the second one gets dirty. All it will cost is the 2 filters and 4 ball valves and some 90 deg elbows and a length of pipe. If this is a new house you may have the plastic pipe and that will make the job even easier.

If you get a plumber, I would guess about 3-500 in labor plus parts.

good luck with the new house.

We need to put a sediment filter in our house, which is on a well. What kind is best, and where does it go?
Natural Filtration

Plumbing forums tell us that sediment filters should not be put between the well and the pressure tank. Is that true? also, is this a job that I can do, or should I leave it to a plumber. The amount of sediment isn't great, but it does clog up the washing machine metal filter on the cold water intake, and the kitchen sink faucet.

Roger, ya I'm on a well also, i went alittle overboard , what i did was, (after pump , before pressure tank), use 2 large particle filters first and then 2 fine filters, you can go to home depot and they can set you right up with directions and material, It took me about 2hrs to do it , the filters are fairly cheep , i found that it works great, but like i said i went over board on it. you can screw the hole system into the wall,(put a piece of 2x4 in first so the filters are not flush on the wall), you will be able to get to the filters alot easier.I hope this helps you a bit. Price for installation of a sediment filter for a well system under construction?
2008 Minnesota Trip: Minneapolis

How much should I expect to pay for the installation of a whole-house sediment filter which will reside in the basement. The house is under construction and the basement is not finished. Located in Western Maryland. I know the part is cheap (like $50). I want to know what a good labor rate would be for this job. Our plummer asked for $200. Seems high to me. Thoughts? Thanks.

$200 is a good price. call 2 others and get prices from them

Problems with Brita water filter: black sediment in water?
Tubular enigma

Changed the filter and there is still black sediment in my drinking water. Without the filter, there is no black sediment.

Any advice? Besides remove the filter (not an option, I have a baby)

Check the directions on the filter package. some filters require you to run a certain amount of water through the filter to get rid of the excess charcol. Also if you are still getting the same color of water, then I would return the filter to the store and get another one as it might be defective.

Good Luck :-)

When do I need a water softener /sediment filter combination?
Equipment - Sediment Filter1

Always with well water or in most rural areas. I would put a sediment filter on any water softener to make it last longer.

If your water is too hard put in the best you can find, it'll pay for itself.

    Abstract

Phosphorus (P) and sediment losses in runoff from agricultural land are a serious environmental issue because of the impact on surface water quality and eutrophication. The main factors affecting the transport of P to surface waters are erosion and runoff. Non-application setbacks, perennial vegetative filters, reservoirs, terraces, reduced tillage, and other management practices are intended to reduce P and sediment loss from the watersheds. Four major hypotheses were tested in this study: (1) P and sediment loss are reduced when manure is not applied within setbacks around conduits to surface water; (2) Grass filters will result in reduced sediment and P loading with increased effectiveness as the area ratio of filter to drainage basin increases; 3) 15-20% of the watershed area is the source of more than 50% of P and sediment loading; and 4) Contaminant loading of Duck Creek can be reduced by 30-50% by increasing the use of conservation BMPs on 50% of the watershed land area. Research was conducted under rainfed agricultural systems in eastern Nebraska to address the following objectives: (1) to determine the effectiveness of non-application setbacks for manure from conduits to surface waters in reducing P and sediment in runoff; (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of grass filters in reducing runoff volume and loss of P and sediment; (3) to assess the impact of management practices on sediment and nutrient losses from the watershed using a watershed model; and (4) to evaluate different management scenarios required to achieve further targeted reductions in sediment and P loss to surface waters using a watershed model. The seven treatments of the setback study included no manure applied and nonapplication setbacks of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 m around the riser with the setback distances limited on the terrace side by the top of terraces. Runoff sampling methods were compared and the effects of drainage basin characteristics determined. The effect of grass filters on sediment and P concentration was determined from four runoff events in 2006-2008 when nearly all plots had runoff. The grass filters also were evaluated for effect on runoff volume and contaminants load using total annual runoff and composite samples collected from 12 runoff events. In the watershed modeling study, the SWAT model was used to evaluate the effects of tillage, grass filter strips, and terraces on nutrient and sediment loss. Critical areas for these contaminants were identified in the watershed and implementation of management scenarios was simulated on targeted vulnerable areas to identify means of reducing nutrient and sediment loss to targeted levels. Three BMPs scenarios were simulated using SWAT model on the small sub-basin to present the impact of different scenarios on sediment reduction and illustrate the importance of BMPs placing and distribution at hydrologic response units.

Fossil whale offers clues on feeding, handedness | HamptonRoads ...

    CARMEL CHURCH

From a patch of ancient seafloor that lies west of Interstate 95, a fossil whale with a broken jaw presents a mystery that may have been solved with today's publication of a paper by the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

The partial skeleton came from a quarry north of Richmond that is considered the best fossil site in Virginia.

"It's just incredibly rich," said Alton C. Dooley Jr., a paleontologist at the museum and co-author on the paper. "I can dig here for the rest of my life and we won't get it all done."

At least a dozen whales have been found at the dig, which is in a quarry operated by Martin Marietta Aggregates. The first whale found was a new species, and a cast of the skeleton is the centerpiece of the nearby Caroline County visitor's center. After that came one rare find after another - whales piled on top of each other, dolphins and sea turtles alongside pieces of land animals such as a horse, a camel, a tapir and a peccary.
